Showers and thunderstorms packing strong winds are blowing through parts of the D.C. region Thursday afternoon and evening.
The National ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµapp Service has issued these watches and warning for the D.C. area:
- Tornado watch for entire D.C. region until 10 p.m.
- Severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Montgomery and Frederick counties in Maryland and northeastern Loudoun County, Virginia, until 3:15 p.m.
- Severe thunderstorm warning for west central Montgomery County, Maryland,
and central Loudoun County, Virginia, until 3:30 p.m.
Severe thunderstorm warnings are popping up in parts of the D.C. region, where NWS cautions that wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph.
Storms could bring in damaging winds, large hail and potentially a few tornados. The D.C. region is under a , which is issued by NWS when conditions could lead to the formation of severe storms and tornado.
ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµapp Meteorologist Mike Stinneford said the storms will move from west to east.
Thursday’s severe storms are expected to be most impactful in areas east of U.S. Route 15, according to NWS.
“We do have a risk for severe weather and also flooding,” 7News First Alert Meteorologist Eileen Whelan said.
Urban areas are especially at risk of flash flooding, according to the National ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµapp Service. The highest risk is near and northeast of Baltimore, Maryland.
Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and into the evening. SPC has east of the Blue Ridge in a slight risk for severe weather with damaging wind gusts, large hail, and a few tornadoes possible. Stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings!

“Severe weather risks taper off after 8 p.m. with patchy fog developing,” Whelan said.

Before the storms arrive, Thursday will be hot and humid in the D.C. region with highs near 90.
“Temperatures will fall into the 70s once those storms come through, and we’ll see cooler temperatures overnight in the 60s,” Whelan said.
Friday will be overcast, mostly dry and cooler than Thursday with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.
