Metro is investigating a “potential heat-related track issue” after a single train car derailed outside the College Park station in Maryland Saturday.
“All 11 customers on board the impacted 3000-series train have been safely evacuated and no serious injuries were reported,” Metro said .
The incident happened shortly before noon Saturday. Metro initially warned of delays and single-tracking due to a disabled train outside College Park.
Metro said on X that a preliminary “investigation shows extreme heat as the cause of a rail heat kink that derailed the wheels of a 3000-series 6-car train (pictured below). Crews will remove the train overnight to ensure the safety of our team and customers.”
UPDATE: We will continue single tracking on the Green Line between West Hyattsville Crossing and College Park through system close. Customers will experience minimal impacts to service.

Prince George’s County Fire/EMS responded to the scene and evaluated the passengers. A man was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Another refused transport, the fire department said.
“We have also reduced speeds to 35 mph on aboveground tracks systemwide in response to the elevated temperatures per our standard operating procedure,” Metro said.
Metro slows its trains when track temperatures reach 135 degrees.
Recently, the agency began experimenting with painting some of its above-ground tracks white to reflect sunlight and keep track segments a bit cooler.
鈥淓arly indications are positive. We鈥檝e seen about, I believe, six- to eight-degree drop lower when they are painted white,鈥� Metro Deputy General Manager Andy Off told 蜜桃视频app’s John Domen.
