Press, Morgan lead US past England into Women’s World Cup final

The U.S. Women’s National Team survived a game-tying goal called back on video review and a penalty shot late in the second half to beat England 2-1 Tuesday and advance to the World Cup final.

With the Americans leading 2-1, Ellen White split the American defense in the 67th minute, but VAR ruled her offside. Later, VAR awarded England a penalty kick as Becky Sauerbrunn’s knee knocked White off a run right in front of goal, but Alyssa Naeher easily saved Steph Houghton’s shot to keep the U.S. in front.

The Americans will play the winner of Sweden and the Netherlands Sunday to defend their Women’s World Cup title.

Christen Press opened the scoring early for the U.S. once again, heading home a cross from Kelley O’Hara in the 10th minute to put the Americans in front. The goal broke a 380-minute shutout streak for England. The USWNT still has not trailed in the tournament.

Press started up top for Megan Rapinoe, sidelined with a reported hamstring injury, after Rapinoe had scored two goals in each of the Americans’ last two games, accounting for the entirety of their scoring against Spain and France.

But White leveled the score just nine minutes after Press’s goal, sneaking past Abby Dahlkemper and flicking a cross past Alyssa Naeher off the inside of the far post and in. It was White’s sixth goal of the World Cup, pushing her into the lead for the Golden Boot.

Alex Morgan grabbed her sixth goal of the tournament and pushed the U.S. back in front with a header in the 31st minute, just moments after banging her head in an aerial collision. Morgan finished off a deft chip from Lindsay Horan for her first goal since the opening game of the group stage against Thailand.
