On a per-share basis, the Peoria, Illinois-based company said it had profit of $1.82. Earnings, adjusted for investment gains, came to 83 cents per share.
The results beat Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 71 cents per share.
The specialty insurance company posted revenue of $575.6 million in the period. Its adjusted revenue was $463.1 million.
