Woman impaled by beach umbrella in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — A spokeswoman for a Maryland beach town says a woman has been accidentally impaled in the chest by a beach umbrella.

Ocean City spokeswoman Jessica Waters said it happened Sunday afternoon on the beach.

Ocean City Beach Patrol Capt. Butch Arbin said the call initially came in at 3:11 p.m., according to and .

He said the unattended rental umbrella pierced the 46-year-old Pennsylvania woman in the upper left chest. It happened on the beach at 54th Street.

Waters says a Maryland State Police helicopter took the woman to Peninsula Regional Medical Center. The woman’s injuries were not life-threatening.

Last week, a woman was impaled by a beach umbrella on the New Jersey shore. Authorities said part of the umbrella pierced the woman’s ankle after being driven along by the force of the wind.
