WASHINGTON — A judge has denied the release request of Coast Guard Lt. Christopher Hasson, the Silver Spring man who prosecutors called a “domestic terrorist” and had harbored extremist views.
Federal prosecutors have 14 days to charge him with more serious charges; Hasson currently faces drug and gun charges.
The Associated Press reported that Judge Charles Day ordered the 49-year-old Hasson held Thursday but said he might be willing to reconsider later if the government hasn’t charged him with more serious crimes in the next two weeks.
Prosecutors argued that “no conditions” for release would be sufficient to protect the public.
But Hasson’s defense said Hasson had “dedicated his entire life to serving his country.”
Prosecutors have said the drug and gun charges are the “proverbial tip of the iceberg.”
A search of his Silver Spring basement apartment turned up 15 firearms and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition. According to court documents, Hasson was planning “to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country.”
