Start the new year with a ‘First Day’ hike

WASHINGTON — If your New Year’s resolution is to get healthy, why not start outdoors? Dress warmly, put on your hiking shoes and head to a national or state park.

For example, the National Park Service is no longer charging an entrance fee for visiting . A lot of “First Day” hikes are scheduled for Friday, including at in Maryland and in Upper Marlboro. Those are just some of 30 planned in Maryland.

All 50 states are participating in the fifth annual events, which encourage everyone to celebrate the new year with outdoor exploration and recreation.

Last year, more than 41,000 people covered over 79,000 miles on 997 hikes across the country.
