2 Fairfax Co. farmers markets extend their seasons

WASHINGTON — Two farmers markets in Fairfax County are extending their seasons into December.

“We have cheese, pies, eggs, all kinds of different specialties for the holidays — along with fresh produce, bread and honey,” said Judy Pedersen, a spokeswoman with the Fairfax County Park Authority. “There’s winter squash, greens, apples, potatoes, carrots — and we haven’t even talked about the gifts.”

traditionally run between May and October or November.

The markets with extended seasons are:

  • Open 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays through Dec. 17
    VRE Parking Lot
    5671 Roberts Pkwy
    Burke, Virginia 22015

  • Open 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays through Dec. 14
    Sherwood Library
    2501 Sherwood Hall Lane
    Alexandria, Virginia 22306

“If this is popular enough … we’ll be looking to perhaps spread this to some of the other markets as well,” Pedersen said, adding that the decision to extend the markets’ seasons happened because they’re performing so well with dedicated visitors and vendors.

“For the holidays, the meat vendors in particular have been especially pleased with the kind of responses they’ve been getting,” she said.

Fairfax County farmers markets are “producer-only,” meaning that everything is from no farther than 125 miles away, and is made or produced only by the farms that participate.
