Arlington transformer fire spews smoke, closes road

WASHINGTON 鈥� Fire crews in Arlington battled聽a transformer fire in a building on Clarendon Boulevard for about two hours before containing it Tuesday morning.

The Arlington County Fire Department says that a transformer caught fire in the basement of a building in the 2800 block of Clarendon Boulevard around 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Shortly after 9, they said that they had dispatched a second alarm and firefighters on the scene were asking for an airport crash truck with dry-chemical capabilities. They sprayed a dry purple chemical and foam on the fire.

The fire department said via Twitter that the fire was brought contained聽at about 11 a.m.

They say no one was hurt; Hundreds of Dominion Virginia Power聽were without power as a result.

Clarendon Boulevard was closed at Fillmore Street while fire crews battles the blaze.
