Mostly dry weather is expected overnight, as clouds thicken ahead of our next weather maker. A highly isolated shower can’t be ruled out, but the majority of folks will stay rain-free. Temperatures won’t be quite as cool as the past two nights, but it will be seasonable with lows in the upper 60s in the suburbs to lower 70s inside the Beltway. It will also be moderately humid with dew point temperatures rising in the middle 60s.

Friday starts fairly quiet, but the atmosphere becomes increasingly unstable as the day wears on. Sunshine and building humidity will push temperatures into the mid 80s to around 90 during the afternoon. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop as a cold front approaches from the northwest. A few storms may become strong, capable of producing damaging wind gusts and frequent lightning. Anyone with outdoor plans later in the day should keep a close eye on the forecast and have a sturdy shelter nearby.

Saturday remains an unsettled weather day as the slow-moving front lingers nearby. Clouds will mix with occasional breaks of sunshine, allowing temperatures to climb into the middle and upper 80s. Additional showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop, some may have the potential to bring pockets of moderate to heavy rainfall.

Sunday looks noticeably quieter, although a leftover shower or thunderstorm cannot be completely ruled out. As the front settles south of the area, temperatures should remain more comfortable with afternoon highs generally in the middle 80s. Humidity levels ease somewhat compared to Saturday, and there should be increasing opportunities for sunshine as the day progresses.
NEXT WEEK INTO 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND:
Next week looks increasingly hot and mainly dry as high pressure builds over the Mid-Atlantic, setting the stage for a possible heat wave leading into the Fourth of July weekend. Highs climb back toward 90 early in the week, then likely push well into the 90s by late week. With humidity increasing, feels like temperatures may reach the upper 90s to near or above 100 at times, creating a stretch of potentially dangerous heat. Rain chances look limited once the weekend front moves offshore, allowing the heat to build day after day.
