It’s back to school for more than 80,000 kids in Loudoun County, Virginia, on Thursday.

Here are a few changes in the school system:

Face masks are not required this year in Loudoun County Public Schools, with the exception of preschool programs.

Also, a program that provided free meals during the COVID-19 emergency is over now, and families will resume paying for student meals at pre-pandemic prices.

Principal Tim Sparbanie of Elaine E. Thompson Elementary School in Sterling said he’s expecting nearly 900 students.

“We’re all excited about the very first day of school. So that’s the exciting part; opening a brand-new building, welcoming everybody inside. Its going to be great,” Sparbanie told ĂŰĚŇĘÓƵapp.

School doors open to students at 7:10 a.m. on weekdays, with classes starting 20 minutes later. He said there are “about 110 total staff members” to begin the school year.

On social media, some people complained about waiting in crowded and dirty conditions in the terminal.

Widespread disruption to Charles Co. school bus routes amid sick-out /charles-county/2021/10/nearly-20-schools-bus-routes-canceled-in-charles-co-amid-sick-out/ /charles-county/2021/10/nearly-20-schools-bus-routes-canceled-in-charles-co-amid-sick-out/#respond Mon, 25 Oct 2021 13:00:56 +0000 /?p=22953794 Charles County students and parents are dealing with widespread interruptions to school bus routes Monday as drivers continue a labor action pressuring the Maryland district’s administrators for fairer wages.

In a news release, Charles County Public Schools said 157 bus routes did not have coverage as of 8:15 a.m. Monday, with 59 buses out of service — about a fifth of the system’s bus fleet. One bus may provide service for up to four different schools.

.

Monday morning’s cancellations come after dozens of bus routes were stopped Friday as drivers took part in a planned sick-out, leaving parents with short notice to get their kids to school on time. It led to a higher-than-average number of absences in the Maryland public school district’s middle and high schools.

Bus drivers plan to continue negotiations over wages and other issues with the school system in mid-November. In its Monday update, CCPS said staff are working with the 26 contractors who provide bus services to address their concerns.

Students who are late or miss school Monday will not be penalized, the school system said.

Motorcade for service member killed in Afghanistan heading through Northern Va. /fairfax-county/2021/09/motorcade-for-service-member-killed-in-afghanistan-to-head-through-northern-va/ /fairfax-county/2021/09/motorcade-for-service-member-killed-in-afghanistan-to-head-through-northern-va/#respond Thu, 16 Sep 2021 19:33:51 +0000 /?p=22807010 A police motorcade Thursday escorted one of the 13 service members killed outside the Kabul airport during the Afghanistan withdrawal last month.

Two helicopters also accompanying the hearse as it drives through Northern Virginia. At about 3:15 p.m., the Virginia State Police identified the service member as Army Staff Sgt. Ryan Knauss.

Fairfax County police said the public can show their respects on the overpasses along Interstate 66 east or along the Capital Beltway south of I-66.

At about 3:15, Dave Dildine, in the ĂŰĚŇĘÓƵapp Traffic Center, said eastbound traffic on I-66 was stopped near Haymarket and Gainesville and the eastbound onramps are also closed. The overpasses were full of people paying respect, he said.

“This procession will be moving slowly eastbound down Interstate 66 into Fairfax County over the next half-hour to an hour’s time, eventually moving onto the Outer Loop southbound toward Springfield and then northbound on I-395.”

Westbound I-66 is slow as well, and access to the E-ZPass lanes is closed. “That’s probably the route they’ll take,” Dildine said.

The motorcade will start in Prince William County and head east along I-66. It will then move south on the Beltway, then head north on I-395 before exiting at King Street.

In addition to the 13 service members killed in the Kabul attack, 180 Afghans were killed.

The U.S. completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan on Aug. 30, ending America’s longest war.

The Pentagon has said it evacuated more than 110,000 people.

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said toward the end of August that more than 14,000 people evacuated from Afghanistan have arrived in the commonwealth through Dulles International Airport, calling it “one of the largest airlifts in history” and saying “we can all be proud” of Virginia’s “critical role.”

Fairfax Co. seeing ‘substantial’ transmission as COVID cases rise in region /coronavirus/2021/08/fairfax-co-seeing-substantial-transmission-as-covid-cases-rise-in-region/ /coronavirus/2021/08/fairfax-co-seeing-substantial-transmission-as-covid-cases-rise-in-region/#respond Thu, 05 Aug 2021 21:43:06 +0000 /?p=22666881 Fairfax County, Virginia, is now reporting substantial transmission of the coronavirus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as having at least 50 total new cases per 100,000 persons in the past seven days.

Fairfax County, Virginia’s largest county in terms of population, is at 56 cases per 100,000 as of Thursday.

The CDC’s four levels of community transmission range from low to high. Substantial is the second-highest tier; 100 cases or more per 100,000 people would be considered “high.”

The cities of Manassas, Manassas Park and Falls Church are the only jurisdictions in Northern Virginia that are not seeing substantial community transmissions.

Cases have been rising throughout the region since mid-July — a surge largely attributed to the more infectious delta variant and lagging vaccination rates in some communities.

The CDC recommends that in areas of substantial transmission, people wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status.

D.C. is seeing substantial transmission of the virus and has reimplemented its indoor mask mandate.

Health leaders in Alexandria and the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William recommend indoor mask-wearing regardless of vaccination status.

Maryland’s most populous county — Montgomery County — on Thursday voted to reinstate an indoor mask mandate. The county has a weekly average of just under 58 cases per 100,000.

And Prince George’s County on Thursday announced that masks would be required inside all county government buildings — following that up hours later by mandating masks indoors in all public venues in the county, irrespective of whether they’re vaccinated.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam on Thursday each mandated vaccines, or regular testing, for many or all state workers in their respective states.

Several DC-area counties seeing ‘substantial’ COVID uptick /coronavirus/2021/08/several-dc-area-counties-seeing-substantial-covid-uptick/ /coronavirus/2021/08/several-dc-area-counties-seeing-substantial-covid-uptick/#respond Mon, 02 Aug 2021 10:58:55 +0000 /?p=22652622 The D.C. region is seeing an uptick in coronavirus cases.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s , several counties in the D.C. region fall within the substantial rate of community transmission of COVID-19 — or a weekly average of at least 50 cases per 100,000 residents.

The cities of Alexandria and Fredericksburg, along with Arlington, Loudoun, Fauquier, Frederick, Culpeper and Prince William counties in Virginia, fall within that category, as well as D.C. itself.

D.C. has reimplemented its indoor mask mandate. In Alexandria, masks are required in city buildings.

Anne Arundel and St. Mary’s counties in Maryland are being added to the substantial transmission list that already includes Prince George’s and Charles counties.

Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman is expected to address the rise in cases later Monday morning.

4 residents displaced after Montgomery Co. house fire /montgomery-county/2021/07/4-residents-displaced-after-montgomery-co-house-fire/ /montgomery-county/2021/07/4-residents-displaced-after-montgomery-co-house-fire/#respond Mon, 05 Jul 2021 11:30:37 +0000 /?p=22552981 Four people have been displaced after a house fire in Montgomery County, Maryland, on Sunday night.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue said the fire on Holly Spring Drive in Burtonsville started at about 11 p.m. in either the laundry room or the deck of the two-story, single-family residence.

One of the family said they smelled and saw smoke and flames coming from the deck, which was covered with vinyl flooring, the fire department said. A neighbor called 911.

Officials were told that a contractor installed a new HVAC on Sunday, which a fire spokesperson said “may have involved work on the electrical system.”

He also said that the only ignition source identified that was common to the deck and the laundry room was electrical.

There were no reported injuries. However, the fire caused $1 million in damages.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze. They said the deck and laundry room floor, at the back of the home, collapsed, and that this has limited examination of the area.

Prince William Co. board considers plastic bag tax /prince-william-county/2021/04/prince-william-co-board-considers-plastic-bag-tax/ /prince-william-county/2021/04/prince-william-co-board-considers-plastic-bag-tax/#respond Wed, 07 Apr 2021 12:37:16 +0000 /?p=22237438 It could soon cost you to use plastic bags at grocery stores in Prince William County, Virginia.

The county board is considering adding a 5-cent tax per plastic bag. Certain items like meat, fish and poultry would be exempt.

“You could alternatively choose to perhaps buy one of the bags the stores offer,” county finance director Michelle Attreed said. “You could bring your own bag.”

Revenue collected would be put toward cleaning up the environment, picking up litter and reducing pollution.

“This isn’t a revenue-generator. It’s really about getting rid of the plastic bag stuff I see everywhere,” said Ann Wheeler, chair of the Prince William Board of Supervisors.

The Virginia General Assembly passed legislation last year allowing localities to impose a bag tax.

A similar tax exists in D.C. and in Maryland’s Montgomery and Howard counties.
