A massive tractor-trailer fire caused traffic delays for hours Wednesday morning on Interstate 270 in Frederick County, Maryland.

All southbound lanes were closed for around eight hours while crews cleaned up from the fire. Traffic is getting by the scene and all lanes reopened by 5 p.m., .

Before 6 a.m., a driver pulled up beside the tractor-trailer and motioned that the vehicle was on fire near mile marker 25 on southbound I-270, according to Maryland State Police.

“When the driver pulled over, the tractor-trailer became fully engulfed in flames,” police told 蜜桃视频app.

Listeners who called the 蜜桃视频app Traffic Center described the tractor-trailer as completely “ablaze”

When Frederick County fire and rescue crews arrived on the scene at approximately 5:57 a.m. to put out the fire, the driver was already out of the vehicle, officials said.

Most of the fire had been extinguished by 7:22 a.m., with some hotspots remaining, After the bulk of the flames were knocked down, crews moved the cargo inside of the truck out onto the roadway to prevent it from reigniting, a fire spokeswoman told 蜜桃视频app.

Fire crews cleared the scene at 12:15 p.m and investigators don’t believe anything hazardous was on the truck, the spokeswoman told 蜜桃视频app.

Moving the truck’s contents out of the roadway extended the closure for a couple of hours after the flames were extinguished.

For much of the day, first responders diverted I-270 southbound traffic between Maryland Route 80 to Urbana on Exit 26 and Maryland Route 109 towards Hyattstown on Exit 22.

No one was reported injured.

Work planned with drawbridge opening this week on Woodrow Wilson Bridge /local/2023/04/work-planned-with-drawbridge-opening-this-week-on-woodrow-wilson-bridge/ Tue, 11 Apr 2023 16:03:25 +0000 /?p=24697662 Motorists using the Capital Beltway between Oxon Hill, Maryland, and Alexandria, Virginia, can expect overnight stops and lane closures later this week with routine maintenance planned, drawbridge openings and a ship passing at the Woodrow Wilson Bridge.

The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration has scheduled overnight work starting 11 p.m. Thursday, April 13. Work on the bridge will require periodic opening of the drawbridge, resulting in full traffic stops in both directions.

The traffic stops are expected to last 15 to 20 minutes each, and will occur several times overnight. The maintenance is necessary to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the drawbridge. Work is expected to be completed by 5 a.m. Friday.

Then, beginning at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, the drawbridge will open for a planned boat passage on the Potomac River, which will require full traffic stops in both directions on the bridge. This stop will take approximately 20 minutes.

Motorists are advised to allow extra driving time overnight on Thursday and Friday to accommodate the delays.

MDOT SHA understands this work will inconvenience some travelers and asks all motorists to stay alert and be patient while passing through the area.

Week-long work zone on US-50 in Maryland could hamper commuters /dc-transit/2023/03/week-long-work-zone-on-us-50-in-maryland-could-hamper-commute/ Tue, 21 Mar 2023 18:26:25 +0000 /?p=24636434 Maryland transportation officials have temporarily closed the right lanes on a stretch of U.S. Route 50, just outside of Annapolis, Maryland, to make bridge repairs 鈥 an around-the-clock project that could slow westbound commuters.

Crews with the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration closed the right lane of westbound Route 50/John Hanson Highway between the Md. Route 2/Ritchie Highway on-ramp and the Severn River Bridge for the bridge repairs.

The crew will replace damaged guardrail, concrete aprons and posts.

The right lane closure will remain in effect around the clock until work is completed, which is projected to be on or around March 25, weather permitting.

This week-long, 24/7 right-lane closure is necessary for worker safety due to the proximity of the work area and traffic on westbound Route 50, MDOT SHA said.

The project began overnight Monday. Drivers, particularly those traveling from southbound Route 2 onto westbound Route 50, should remain alert as they merge into the Route 50 travel lanes and plan on extra commute time, or consider using alternate routes through the remainder of the week.

Maryland

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has begun a project to repair and rehabilitate the I-95 bridge over the Outer Loop of I-495 Capital Beltway in the College Park area of Prince George鈥檚 County.

This project includes repairing bridge deck joints and rehabilitating the concrete piers and columns, adding decades of reliable service life for the structure. 蜜桃视频app permitting, the project will be complete spring 2023.

Work will take place under the bridge during off-peak hours with single-lane and shoulder closures on I-495 throughout the duration of the project. Non-emergency lane closures are suspended for the holidays Monday, December 26, and Monday, January 2, 2023.

In an ongoing effort to improve work zone safety, MDOT SHA has deployed Maryland SafeZones Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras along I-495 Capital Beltway below I-95 in the work area. A warning period began December 12 for motorists exceeding the posted speed limit of 55 mph. Beginning January 3, after a 21-day warning period, Maryland State Police will review and authorize citations.

By law, if a vehicle is recorded traveling at or above a specified rate over the posted speed limit, a $40 fine will be issued to the registered owner of the vehicle. The posted speed is 55 mph at this location.

MDOT SHA has also begun replacing the U.S. Route 301 northbound (Blue Star Memorial Highway) bridge at the Chester River crossing. Originally constructed in 1955, the bridge is safe for the traveling public, but the bridge deck surface is nearing the end of its useful service life.

The replacement bridge will provide wider shoulders to match those on U.S. 301, improving safety. During construction, traffic will be shifted to the U.S. 301 southbound bridge, which will carry one lane of traffic in each direction.

This traffic pattern will enable the closure of northbound U.S. 301 and help to expedite the northbound U.S. 301 bridge replacement project over the Chester River, which is scheduled to be completed in late 2023.

Members of the general public can take part in this year鈥檚 National Wreaths Across America Day, beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Arlington National Cemetery will be one of more than 3,000 participating locations nationwide. Volunteers may place wreaths at the base of a veteran鈥檚 headstone to honor their legacy and remember their sacrifice.

This event in the past has caused congestion to enter Arlington cemetery before and during the event, with delays forming on the Memorial Bridge and circle, Va. Route 110 and the George Washington Parkway.

Virginia

In Fredericksburg, Virginia, the traffic shift has been completed to the new I-95 northbound bridge over the Rappahannock River between Spotsylvania and Stafford counties. This will be the first weekend for travel on the three lanes of I-95 northbound crossing a new Rappahannock River bridge between Fredericksburg and Stafford County.

The work completed overnight to finish connecting lanes leading to and from the new bridge, wrapping up nearly 60 hours of an extended work zone that started Monday evening.

Opening the bridge is a major milestone for the project. The $132 million project is adding three additional travel lanes between Route 3/Exit 130 and the Falmouth/Warrenton Exit 133 interchanges, which is the busiest segment of interstate highway in the Fredericksburg region, carrying an average of 150,000 vehicles a day. The project is anticipated to complete by spring 2024.

Through late December, northbound I-95 traffic seeking to reach Route 17 through Exit 133 Falmouth/Warrenton in Stafford will instead be directed to exit just north of the Fall Hill Avenue overpass in Fredericksburg. Exiting traffic will cross the original northbound Rappahannock River bridge to access Exit 133 Falmouth/Warrenton. Once a new connection to the Exit 133 off-ramp is built north of the river, this temporary pattern will end.

Once a new connection to the Exit 133 off-ramp is built north of the river, the original northbound Rappahannock River bridge will close for maintenance. Construction will continue over the next 18 months to finish building the local travel lanes between interchanges, as well as to demolish and rebuild a Route 17 overpass that carries Exit 133 ramp traffic, and a fourth northbound lane between Exit 133/Route 17 and Exit 136/Centreport Parkway.

This week in the there have been lane closures of both sides of I-495 through McLean, work on the George Washington Parkway and the Dulles Toll Road.

  • Nighttime single and multilane closures on I-495 North and South. Daytime single lane closures on I-495 North and South.

Weekend Road and Rail: I-66 and Beltway stops, Red Line shutdown /dc-transit/2022/11/stops-planned-for-i-66-and-the-beltway-metro-red-line-shutdown/ Fri, 18 Nov 2022 10:48:07 +0000 /?p=24232257&preview=true&preview_id=24232257 It’ll prove a chilly weekend for many in the D.C. region, but most roadwork should still go ahead as scheduled. The planned changes include stops for the 66 Transformation Project on both directions of Interstate 66 and the Capital Beltway.

There are changes in the 495 Next Project and the Purple Line Construction. Metro has planned a Red Line shutdown. Here鈥檚 what you need to know.

Roadwork

Virginia

Changes to traffic patterns related to the 66 Transforms Outside the Beltway/Express Lanes Expansion Project seem to be shifting at warp speed. Those traveling the stretch of the corridor between the Beltway and Gainesville are continuing to see changes on an almost daily basis.

A big one to be aware of this weekend is near the Beltway, where the I-66 East general-purpose lanes to the 495 Express Lanes will begin using a new 66 Express Lanes flyover ramp. The new ramp is located on the right side of I-66 East, just after the Cedar Lane Bridge over I-66, and about one-mile after (or east of) the I-66/Nutley Street interchange.

This ramp will be a permanent feature of the Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project and will be the only way for motorists to reach the 495 Express Lanes from the I-66 East general-purpose lanes.

In the final 66 Express Lanes configuration, eastbound 66 Express Lanes traffic will be able to exit to the I-495 general purpose lanes and 495 Express Lanes, or continue east on I-66 inside the Beltway. Eastbound I-66 general purpose traffic will be able to exit to I-495 or continue east on I-66 inside the Beltway.

The first nine miles of the 66 Express Lanes opened between Gainesville and Va. Route 28 in Centreville on Sept. 10. The remaining portion of the 66 Express Lanes between I-495 and Route 28 is planned to open in the westbound direction on or about Saturday, Nov. 19, and in the eastbound direction by the end of November.

The is also implanting a ramp change this week to facilitate construction for the Express Lane Expansion on the Beltway. Motorists traveling northbound I-495 Capital Beltway to westbound Dulles Toll Road will take an earlier exit, rather than the existing left exit (Exit 45), which is closing to allow room for construction of a new, replacement I-495 bridge over the Dulles Toll Road ramps.

This earlier exit ramp is an existing 495 North Express Lanes ramp located about one-third of a mile ahead of Exit 45, just before (slightly south of) the Dulles Toll Road bridges, which also will now be used by general purpose traffic.

To facilitate this new travel pattern, I-495 will be reduced from four to three lanes for a stretch of approximately one-half mile near the I-495 and Dulles Corridor interchange. This new configuration is expected to be in place from November 2022 through early 2025. Due to this change, drivers traveling on southbound Route 123 will not be able to access the westbound Dulles Toll Road from northbound I-495.

Maryland

A few changes are in the works along University Boulevard as part of the ongoing between Montgomery and Prince Georges counties. Be sure to check the site for any ongoing changes and travel information.

As of this week, there is a new long-term traffic switch on MD-193/University Boulevard between Tulane Drive and 24th Avenue. The lanes have shifted to the newly completed bridge over the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River.

There are two lanes in each direction and pedestrian access will be maintained, including a temporary channelized pedestrian pathway. A new work zone will be established to begin construction of the south bridge over the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River.

Coming up this week, on or about Nov. 21, there is a planned long-term closure of the westbound right lane of University Boulevard between Riggs Road and New Hampshire Avenue. This lane closure is required to install new drainage, sidewalks and curbing.

With this upcoming work, street parking in the work zone will be prohibited. There will be posted signage. Pedestrian access along with access to driveways and businesses on University Boulevard will be maintained. Work will be scheduled between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. during weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Also new this week, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration announced its completion of a $93 million project to reconstruct and expand the I-270/MD 85 Buckeystown Pike interchange in Frederick County.

This project addressed two poorly-rated bridges on I-270 over Md. Route 85, both built in 1950, also thee widening of Route 85 with an additional lane in each direction between Spectrum Drive and just north of Crestwood Boulevard/Shockley Drive. And there are now wider exit ramps to and from I-270.

For all ongoing roadwork projects, .

Due to the Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade, select Ride On routes will experience detours on Saturday, Nov. 19. The parade will run from Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street and proceeds south on Georgia Avenue, ending at Silver Spring Avenue.

The following lane and ramp closures will be in place daily from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Nov. 14 to Nov. 21, 2022, weather permitting.

On days and nights during events at Nationals Park and/or Audi Field, there will be no lane closures from two hours before the start of the event, to two hours after the event concludes.

This weekend, Metrorail will have routine maintenance, which will require single tracking on the Green Line 鈥 and a Red Line shutdown.

Meanwhile, the Yellow Line shutdown continues between the Pentagon and L鈥橢nfant Plaza with the halting Yellow Line service through May 2023.

Metro is running on a normal weekend schedule, opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 1 a.m. on Saturday, and midnight Sunday, serving 95 of 97 stations with the Red Line鈥檚 Bethesda and Medical Center stations closed for switch replacement.

With the Red Line shutdown, free shuttle buses replace service between Friendship Heights and Grosvenor.
