Katie Maguire Walton, Scott’s sister-in-law who organized the fundraiser, thanked those who had contributed.

“Scott was driven, focused, and tireless by nature. Always pushing himself to work harder, do better … So I’m channeling that very spirit of his and going to keep pushing,” Katie posted on the GoFundMe site.

“Taking care of his family would be Scott’s greatest concern and priority. Thank you for helping us shoulder this for him.”

John Walton also said on Twitter that he would be taking time off to support family

“I’ll be gone for a bit to be with my family, thanks to all my Caps and MSE teammates for their support today,” Walton wrote in a Twitter post. “Thanks to all of you for supporting my family through this difficult time.”

Expect ‘Baby Shark’ tunes in Nationals future with Parra’s return /washington-nationals/2021/06/expect-baby-shark-tunes-in-nationals-future-with-parras-return/ /washington-nationals/2021/06/expect-baby-shark-tunes-in-nationals-future-with-parras-return/#respond Sun, 20 Jun 2021 19:07:02 +0000 /?p=22502310 The Washington Nationals have brought back a fan favorite after they selected the contract of outfielder Gerardo Parra on Sunday.

The 34-year-old Parra joins the team after hitting .219 with three doubles, one triple, one homer, 12 RBI, 19 walks and 10 runs scored in 21 games with the clubs Triple-A team in Rochester.

Parra will be an pinch hitter and will be the teams extra outfielder as Andrew Stevenson cannot swing a bat right now. He can also play first base if needed.

Parra saw action on Sunday with a pinch-hit double. Left fielder Kyle Schwarber brought him home with his third home run of the day shortly after.

A key member of Washington’s 2019 World Series Championship, Parra returned to the organization on a minor league contract that included an invitation to 2021 Spring Training.

Back in 2019, Parra hit .250 with 11 doubles, one triple, eight homers, 42 RBI, 11 walks, six stolen bases and 30 runs scored in 89 games for the Nationals.

He hit .373 (19-for-51) with runners in scoring position and led Major League Baseball with a .433 (13-for-30) average with two outs and runners in scoring position.

Parra ended up leaving the Nats and spent the 2020 season with the Yomiuri Giants of the Japan Professional League, where he hit .272 with four doubles, one triple, four homers, 14 RBI and 17 runs scored in 55 games.

A two-time Gold Glove Award winner (2011, 2013), Parra spent parts of 11 Major League seasons with Washington (2019), San Francisco (2019), Colorado (2016-18), Baltimore (2015), Milwaukee (2014-15) and Arizona (2009-14).

Oh, and Parra is wearing his familiar 88 on his jersey — and yes — he plans on using the “Baby Shark” theme as his walk up music at Nationals Park.

Md. basketball players help U.S. women clinch gold at AmeriCup /ncaa-basketball/2021/06/u-md-basketball-players-help-u-s-women-clinch-gold-at-americup/ /ncaa-basketball/2021/06/u-md-basketball-players-help-u-s-women-clinch-gold-at-americup/#respond Sun, 20 Jun 2021 17:25:46 +0000 /?p=22502046 The U.S. women’s basketball team won the gold medal at the FIBA AmeriCup — their second-straight — in Saturday night’s 74-59 victory over host nation, Puerto Rico.

The U.S. women are now 30-7 all-time at the event, which featured two rising University of Maryland juniors Ashley Owusu and Diamond Miller.

Owusu averaged 5.8 points, 3.2 rebound and 3 assists in the six games of the tournament. In the final contest she scored 8 points with 3 assists and 3 boards.

For Miller, this is her third gold medal with USA Basketball, after helping the team to the 2019 FIBA U19 World Cup and the 2017 FIBA U16 World Cup titles.

Both Owusu and Miller shared the Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player award this year, after helping lead the Terrapins (26-3) to their fifth Big Ten Tournament title.

Owusu earned Third Team All-America honors from the Associated Press and the USBWA as well. She garnered unanimous All-Big Ten First Team honors and led the nation’s top offense in scoring (17.9) and assists (5.9).

As the Maryland Terps led the nation in scoring (90.8) and in assist turnover ratio (1.70), Owusu topped the record for points averaged by a sophomore in program history — 17.8, by Kaila Charles in the 2017-18 season.

Miller averaged 17.3 points per game and shot 50.6 percent from the field, scoring double figures in 27 straight games and 28 of 29 games this past season.

The bronze medal game had Brazil defeat Canada, 87-82 in double overtime.

The top four finishing teams — the U.S., Brazil, Canada and Puerto Rico — qualified to compete in one of four 2022 FIBA World Cup Qualifying Tournaments that will be used to determine the 12 teams that compete in the 2022 FIBA World Cup

Washington QB Alex Smith comes off PUP list, returns to practice /washington-commanders/2020/08/washington-qb-alex-smith-comes-off-pup-list-returns-to-practice/ /washington-commanders/2020/08/washington-qb-alex-smith-comes-off-pup-list-returns-to-practice/#respond Sun, 16 Aug 2020 14:00:22 +0000 /?p=21363314 The Washington Football Team moved quarterback Alex Smith off the Physically Unable to Perform list Sunday morning, clearing the veteran QB for football activities after his 21-month rehabilitation from a gruesome leg injury he suffered in Nov. 2018.

Smith is practicing with the team on Sunday and according to Washington Head Coach Ron Rivera, his return isn’t just symbolic.

“I think this is a guy that becomes part of our equation,” Rivera said of the 36-year-old quarterback. “I mean it’s the truth of the matter is that he’ll be part of a competition going forward.”

Smith’s wife Elizabeth hinted toward the move to clear Smith in an Instagram post Saturday, writing “Hard work pays off! Lots to celebrate in the Smith house tonight,” in the caption of a video in which she sprays her husband with a bottle of Champagne.

Smith told ESPN in July that he was cleared by his personal doctors to return to the field, but Washington’s team doctors exhibited additional caution before clearing him Sunday. The quarterback broke the tibia and fibula in his right leg during a November 18 game against the Houston Texans and has since undergone 17 surgeries due to infection.

Doctors considered amputating his leg and Smith nearly lost his life. But the quarterback was determined to make a return to the field.

The NFL season is set to begin in 28 days. The Washington Football Team took to Twitter on Sunday to make the announcement and to post pictures of the quarterback working out with the team.

Salisbury completed an undefeated 2019 regular season but will not play in the fall of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. (J. Brooks/ĂŰĚŇĘÓƵapp)

The New Jersey Athletic Conference announced Tuesday fall sports and league championships are suspended for 2020, which ends football season for Salisbury University in Maryland before it begins.

“The NJAC will pursue every avenue within the NCAA governance structure to explore the provision of a competitive season for the fall sport student-athletes during the spring 2021 semester and allow them to engage in practice and training opportunities during the fall 2020 semester,” the Division III conference said in a statement.

Salisbury head football coach Sherman Wood told ĂŰĚŇĘÓƵapp: “All along I just wanted a decision. Now that we have a decision, [SU’s COVID Taskforce] can now put a safe and productive plan together for the safety and betterment of our students and staff.”

Wood said if all goes well, the team could still manage to put a patchwork season together.

“The NCAA will allow 114 days of combine practices and games during the fall and spring. My motto is ‘114 days to a Championship,'” he said.

Salisbury, an affiliate member of the NJAC in football only, won the conference championship following an undefeated 2019 regular season. The Sea Gulls have made 16 consecutive Division III postseason appearances.

2 Nationals players test positive for coronavirus ahead of shortened MLB season /washington-nationals/2020/07/2-nationals-players-test-positive-for-coronavirus-ahead-of-shortened-mlb-season/ /washington-nationals/2020/07/2-nationals-players-test-positive-for-coronavirus-ahead-of-shortened-mlb-season/#respond Sun, 05 Jul 2020 18:40:29 +0000 /?p=21208973 Washington Nationals Manager Dave Martinez revealed that two of the team’s 60 players tested positive for the coronavirus during intake testing on Sunday.

Martinez made the announcement over a Zoom call with media Sunday and said that neither player who tested positive have been to Nationals Park.

The two players, who Martinez did not identify, were found to have COVID-19 during intake testing. Everyone must show negative results before they are allowed to enter the stadium.

Sean Doolittle, a relief pitcher for the Nationals, has as the coronavirus pandemic makes a resurgence in various states throughout the country.

In a Sunday Zoom call with media, Doolittle questioned why he was tested for the virus again earlier in the day when he still had not received the results from his test on Friday.

He dismissed the idea that fans could return to ballparks once games resume, which was recently suggested by some owners.

“We haven’t done any of the things that other countries have done to bring sports back,” Doolittle said.

“Sports are like the reward of a functioning society. And we’re trying to just bring it back, even though we taken none of the steps to flatten the curve.”

The Nationals have been training at the park for the last couple of days ahead of the start of the 2020 season, with the team expected to host the New York Yankees on July 23.

Pitcher Max Scherzer will oppose new Yankee Gerrit Cole, who was a member of the Houston Astros team that the Nationals defeated in the 2019 World Series.

The San Francisco Giants are also expected to be in L.A. to take on the Dodgers that same day, with the rest of MLB playing the next day, July 24.

First Baseman Ryan Zimmerman and pitcher Joe Ross both recently announced that they would not participate in the shortened season due to health and personal reasons.

Major League Baseball is set to officially announce a 60 game schedule Monday, as The Nationals is set to defend its World Series Championship.

A bicycling boom in the DC area: A way to exercise and save money, now more than ever /local/2020/04/a-bicycling-boom-in-the-dc-area-a-way-to-exercise-and-save-money-now-more-than-ever/ /local/2020/04/a-bicycling-boom-in-the-dc-area-a-way-to-exercise-and-save-money-now-more-than-ever/#respond Sun, 12 Apr 2020 20:05:41 +0000 /?p=20977414 Everyone is trying to get some exercise during the COVID-19 pandemic, whether it be working out at home or getting outside for a quick walk.

Some people in the D.C. area are biking to get exercise, as well as to save some money by not driving.

Biking to the store for food or medicine is a chance for a change of scenery from makeshift home office, as well as burning calories – and that’s important because many of our eating habits have changed, drastically.

You can see more and more bikes around the area and that’s music to the ears of Bennett Moore, who manages Big Wheel Bikes store in Old Town Alexandria.

Moore says his business is booming. “Our phones have been ringing off the hook,” he said, adding that he’s gotten “more phones calls than I ever had — any season, I would say for sure.”

Many of the calls are from biking novices, as well as those looking for hybrid bikes which can be used for trail, pavement and off road — a very popular option which will run between $400 and $600.

Nearby Jones Point Park has the Mount Vernon Bike Trail, which runs right under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge in Alexandria, Virginia, where you can bike north to Rosslyn and into the District, or 17 miles south to George Washington’s house at Mount Vernon. Under the bridge is an area to rest, with plenty of room for social distancing.

The Wilson Bridge Trail has bike lanes for access over the Potomac River to the National Harbor in Maryland.

Families are also going out more, and using biking as a distraction from the new normal we are all experiencing.

Igor Trubin, of Alexandria, was out biking with his wife at the Washington Sailing Marina, which the Mount Vernon Bike Trail goes right through, to get some exercise.

Trubin said biking is saving him some money when he goes to the grocery store: He puts less wear and tear on his vehicle while saving gas.

“We prefer to, if possible, bike [rather] than drive,” Trubin said. “Biking to [the marina] is like a workout.”

And if you don’t want to go outside, but still want to ride a bike for your exercise? Try an indoor exercise bike for your cardio workout. Or a mini stationary bike will also do the trick.

We are all trying to stay at home as much as possible right now, and biking, inside or outside, is just another way to stay active, and you might just save some money while you’re at it.

Golf offers some light at the end of the tunnel for sports-starved area residents /sports-columns/2020/04/golf-offers-some-light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel-for-sports-starved-area-residents/ /sports-columns/2020/04/golf-offers-some-light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel-for-sports-starved-area-residents/#respond Sun, 05 Apr 2020 15:32:47 +0000 /?p=20943317 There aren’t many ways to play sports nowadays due to the novel coronavirus, but golf remains a limited option throughout the region.

Saturday, I caught up with a friend of mine on the course as he and his playing partner hit the links, albeit with modifications to prevent players from touching common surfaces as well as removing shared equipment like bunker rakes, ball washers and water coolers.

Puts that arrived close enough to the hole, for example, were often counted as “good.” If the ball wound up in the cup, players made sure to touch the ball only, when picking it up.

My friend and his pal chose to remain nameless, so we will refer to them as “Herbie” and “Buddy.”

Buddy said what he finds the most challenging part of all this is “no pins, no distance markers or scorecards” but added that “being out on the course right now provides a level of normalcy for your life that you can’t get.”

I asked Buddy if anyone who’s reading this or who watched him play today would think he’s crazy for doing this right now in this environment, to which he replied, with a laugh, “most likely, but it wouldn’t be the first time.”

At the end of my time with the guys, Buddy said “taking the frustration out on the ball, it’s been wonderful … it’s just fun to hang and spend time with friends — socially distanced apart.”

Herbie, who was wearing a Washington Capitals hat, had some advice for anyone who’s thinking about doing what he and Buddy did Saturday.

“Just be smart, be safe” and “don’t get too close to one another — there is no need for fist bumps or hi-fives at this point, just go out and have a nice round of golf.”

Herbie is also a season-ticket holder for the Caps as well as the Washington Nationals and the Washington Redskins, and is still holding out hope for a return to the other sports he enjoys.

This in Fairfax, Virginia. Delaware and D.C. are also allowing golf for now, but Maryland is not.

But there are specifics rules, of course, that are needed to allow golfers to continue playing:

For example, there were no pins, ball washers or rakes at Penderbrook since it’s something that everyone would be touching through the day.

Half of the golfers were using carts and the rest were walking, which was the cheaper route, as the course is offering a discount.

Golf course starter Joon Kim said “the walking is great exercise and it doesn’t impact the schedules of the tee times” as the course spaces out the times in the name of social distancing.

As the pandemic has kept the course busy, Kim encourages golfers to call ahead or pay online. And, of course, obey social distancing rules.

With coronavirus on the mind, Kim mentioned that the hand sanitizer parked right outside the clubhouse is the most popular item for those either coming off or going on the course.

Other places around the area to golf include:

DC where you can only play with family members. However public courses are closed, so finding a private course might be your best bet.

Delaware, with its stay-at-home order, has allowed courses allowed to remain open, provided those courses are open. Golfers also must practice social distancing.

Maryland closed their courses on March 23, but limited maintenance is allowed as decline of maintaining courses could lead to vandalism and the course could become compromised, damaged or unsafe. Proper maintenance can reduce disease-carrying insects, which include mosquitoes and ticks.

Other states nearby:

Pennsylvania has closed all courses until further notice, however course owners and associations have petitioned Gov. Wolf for the right to reopen to provide an exercise outlet for Pennsylvanians

West Virginia has open courses as well.

NOTE: The status of each state is fluid and it is recommended to check with your local and state authorities for the most current situation, especially the course you intend to play, as rules for each county or city in each state may supersede any state order.

Caps fans rock the red in more ways than one at blood drive /washington-capitals/2020/03/caps-fans-rock-the-red-in-more-ways-than-one-at-blood-drive/ /washington-capitals/2020/03/caps-fans-rock-the-red-in-more-ways-than-one-at-blood-drive/#respond Sun, 29 Mar 2020 13:54:43 +0000 /?p=20925193
Gene Wu gives every year. Getting a bobblehead is cool, but saving lives is even cooler. (ĂŰĚŇĘÓƵapp/J. Brooks)

Usually when you’re talking about blood in the NHL, it has to do with a fight or someone getting hit by a puck. But without games, blood has a different meaning: The Washington Capitals are continuing their blood drive, and fans and non-fans can donate in this time of crisis.

On Saturday, the Capitals began a week-long donation effort, set to run through Sunday, April 5. It’s usually held at the MedStar Capitals IcePlex, where up to 900 donors give blood over a 10-hour span. But these donation events are being held at three Inova Blood Donor Services locations.

One of the locations, the Woodburn Donor Center, in Annandale, Virginia, was full of donors Saturday, some wearing masks and most wearing Capitals colors, but everyone maintained as safe a distance as possible, and everyone, already in a giving mood, was very pleasant under the circumstances.

Donors get a John Carlson bobblehead and T-shirt, as well as a sense of satisfaction. (ĂŰĚŇĘÓƵapp/J. Brooks)

Donor Recruitment Manager Heather Wade said “the current donation sites were added for safety reasons,” and hinted that “another big event was already the works for July 18.”

Wade said that making an appointment is the best and easiest way to donate, and to “just be patient” through the process of signing up. Even after the Caps drive ends, the center will be open for donations with extended hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Saturdays, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. through April.

Donors usually get a bobblehead and T-shirt depicting a Capitals player. This year it’s defenseman John Carlson.

Gene Wu, an accountant who works for the International Association of Fire Fighters in the District and a long time Caps fan, has been donating since 2004. The bobblehead giveaway is cool, but he does it for other reasons.

“It’s a good feeling to help save lives,” he said, adding, “I know blood banks are low, so why not go out and do something for others?”

He had a message for anyone who is interested in donating: “If you are eligible, it’s pretty painless, and if you can help out some lives, that would be great.”

The Caps usually have four or more events like this a year, but with the already-low supplies of blood and with the coronavirus pandemic, the center is trying to get the word out that you should consider donating if you’re healthy and able.

If you would like to donate, the center will be releasing schedules for March 30 – April 5 over the next few days. They may extend the blood drive because of the pandemic, and because this is a low point of the year for blood donations even under normal circumstances.

  • To donate at the CentreMed location in Centerville, .
  • To donate at the Woodburn location in Annandale, .
  • To donate at the Dulles location, in Sterling, .

You can also call 1-866-BLOODSAVES (866-256-6372).

If you have questions as they relate to COVID – 19, .

The Washington Redskins announced that they have re-signed linebacker Jon Bostic.

Bostic entered the National Football League after being selected in the second round (18th pick, 50th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears.

He signed with Washington on Sunday, after Reuban Foster went down with a torn ACL.

The 28-year-old also has played for the New England Patriots, Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 2019, Bostic started all 16 games in which he appeared, tallying a career-high 105 total tackles, 56 of them solo, while leading all linebackers. He also had one sack, one interception, two passes defended and three tackles for loss.

Before he was drafted, Bostic played at the University of Florida, where he appeared in 51 games while making 32 starts.

Nationals release pitcher Hunter Strickland /washington-nationals/2020/03/nationals-release-pitcher-hunter-strickland/ /washington-nationals/2020/03/nationals-release-pitcher-hunter-strickland/#respond Sun, 15 Mar 2020 17:20:06 +0000 /?p=20848178 The Washington Nationals parted ways with relief pitcher Hunter Strickland on Saturday.

Strickland, 31, was known around Washington for plunking and brawling with then-Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper in 2017. He had signed a deal worth $1.6 million with the Nationals in 2019, but with his release will now be prorated to roughly a quarter of his salary.

The reliever did not appear in any of the team’s postseason games.

Along with Strickland, fellow pitcher David Hernandez was also let go.

The Nationals also assigned outfielder Brandon Snyder to minor league camp. Snyder is a native of Centreville, Virginia, where he went to Westfield High School.

Washington also optioned Jake Noll, Ben Braymer, Aaron Barrett and Kyle McGowin to Triple-A Fresno, while assigning Jacob Wilson, Taylor Gushue, JB Shuck, Dakota Bacus, Bryan Bonnell and Wil Crowe to minor-league camp.

Barrett, who made his emotional return last September after missing four seasons due to various arm injuries, also announced this weekend that he and his wife are expecting the couple’s second child, a son, due in September.

MLB announced last Thursday that the season will be delayed at least two weeks from its scheduled start of March 26 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Teams are speculating the season might not start until sometime in May, since some states in which teams play may have deeper restrictions on public gatherings. That would necessitate a reduced schedule.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Doolittle’s public relations team asked him what he wanted to do in the offseason to extend riding the wave of the historic Fall Classic win.

Did he ask for a cameo in the latest “Star Wars” or TV series, like the Mets’ ?”

No — Doolittle said he wanted to be on his favorite radio game show: NPR’s “Wait Wait … Don’t tell Me!” And his dream came true.

Doolittle was a guest during a segment of “Not My Job.” The staff of the show quizzed the athlete on real-world saves — not the ones he’s used to as a major league pitcher for the Nationals.

The reliever answered three questions by the show’s host Peter Sagal , and let’s just say that Doolittle didn’t strike out.

Doolittle, or “Obi-Sean Kenobi Doolittle” (he’s a huge “Star Wars” fan) used his twitter account to thank the show for his appearance on Thursday.

The first trailer for the Wonder Woman sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, was released on Sunday.

The movie, which was partially filmed throughout Northern Virginia and D.C. during the spring of 2018, is set to be released in June 2020.

In the trailer, you see Gal Gadot — who plays Diana Prince, also known as Wonder Woman — at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in downtown D.C. and fighting off villains at the former Landmark Mall in Alexandria, Virginia.

The original release date for the new film was supposed to have been in November, but director Patty Jenkins was granted more time to work on the highly anticipated sequel.

The action movie is based on the DC Comics character Wonder Woman, and is the follow-up to 2017’s Wonder Woman movie.

Besides Gadot in the titular role, Chris Pine returns as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as Barbara Ann Minerva/Cheetah; with Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright.

Salisbury falls to Muhlenberg in D3 football playoffs /ncaa-football/2019/12/salisbury-falls-to-muhlenberg-in-d3-football-playoffs/ /ncaa-football/2019/12/salisbury-falls-to-muhlenberg-in-d3-football-playoffs/#respond Sun, 08 Dec 2019 11:53:24 +0000 /?p=20505648 Since making its first NCAA quarterfinal appearance since 2011, the Salisbury University football team witnessed an unbeaten season in the NCAA playoffs come to an end Saturday, with a 24-8 loss to Muhlenberg College (No. 4) at Sea Gull Stadium.

The quarterfinal loss gives the No. 6 Gulls an 11-1 record, after being picked to finish second in the New Jersey Athletic Conferences (NJAC) preseason poll. Salisbury was the No. 1 seed out of the East region of the playoffs, defeating SUNY Maritime and Union College in postseason action before losing to Muhlenberg, winners of the Centennial Conference.

Salisbury head coach Sherm Wood in the post game news conference praised his teams effort against a top opponent.

“No one before the season, no one thought we’d be here, no one” Wood said. “Unfortunately, with the situation today, that didn’t take away from the great season we had”

The Mules, who shut out their previous two postseason games, (a Division III record), held the Sea Gulls scoreless until the final quarter. It was only after 11 straight quarters that Salisbury redshirt Sophomore quarterback Jack Lanham scored from 3 yards out and dove across the goal-line for the two-point conversion.

That would be all the scoring for the Gulls, who were the highest scoring team left in the tournament before today’s contest.

Lanham was held to just 49 passing yards, completing only 4 passes on 17 attempts and had 21 rushing yards with an interception and a fumble. Salisbury senior linebacker Patrick Bernardo, with three solo tackles and nine assists, ends his career fifth on the programs all-time tackles list with 283.

Salisbury — who averaged nearly 475 yards of total offense per game — were held to just 176. The Sea Gulls, who will see 19 seniors leave the program, scored an average of 47.5 points a game while allowing 19.2 and were 6-1 at home and a perfect 5-0 on the road.

The Gulls were making their 11th appearance in the NCAA playoffs and are now 10-11 all-time in that tourney.

Muhlenberg junior quarterback Mike Hnatkowsky was 24 of 38 for 264 yards and three touchdowns in the victory. Senior wide receiver, Max Kirin, caught two of Hnatkowsky’s touchdown throws, finishing the afternoon with 6 catches for 88 yards.

Senior kicker, Todd Spirt connected on a 34-yard field goal and made all three of his extra point attempts.

The national semi finals will be Dec. 14, with St. John’s taking on UW-Whitewater and North Central (Illinois) playing Muhlenberg. The National Championship game, the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl will be played on Dec. 20 at 8p ET in Shenandoah, TX. Defending champion Mary Hardin-Baylor lost to UW-Whitewater on Saturday, 26-7.

Salisbury will open up the 2020 regular season at home against Albright College in a nonconference contest on Friday Sept. 4, a 6 p.m. Eastern Time kick.
