will open the sliding doors this week on a new rail car bar and allow patrons aboard after years of anticipation.

Located in the bustling development in Northeast D.C., rail car 5058 won’t be heading to a specific destination, but will begin serving beer, wine and spirits from local vendors this Wednesday.

“We’ve always wanted to celebrate what makes D.C. great, celebrate our culture, our history, and also celebrate local vendors,” said Metrobar co-owner Jesse Rauch.

The design inside rail car 5058 pays homage to Metro with a retro feel and a bit of modern charm, as highlighted by its hexagon floor tiles and original train seats that have been reupholstered.

Decked out with a 22-foot-long bar, people can walk up and order cocktails from inside or outside the train. If you’re looking for a cocktail while aboard, Rauch suggests the “Metro Fashioned,” which is Metrobar’s version of the classic Old Fashioned drink.

Food at the bar is from food trucks and other food vendors that are brought on site.

“We’re really excited to work with some of the best food providers here in the city. And we happen to be adjacent to the ” Rauch said.

The team at Metrobar has worked to navigate a host of issues, including the pandemic and finding funding to make this happen, but says it feels “really good” to showcase what they’ve been working on.

“It’s also going to feel good when people stop asking the question: ‘When is the train car going to open?’” Rauch said.

The rail car’s opening day is Wednesday, July 12 at 4 p.m. It will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 4 p.m. until close, according to the Metrobar website.

For now, no reservations are being accepted and space in the rail car is on a first come, first served basis.

The indoor games include cornhole, darts, Jenga, table tennis, shuffleboard and, of course, pickleball.

“What is amazing about pickleball and roller skating is that both sports have this mass appeal,” Anna Valero, president and founder of Kraken experiences said. “It doesn’t matter how old or athletic you are. Both are activities that everyone can enjoy.”

After dreaming of what the space would look like and what the reaction would be like, Valero said it’s exciting to see it come to life with the backing of the community.

“It’s really rewarding to have the community in a lot of ways validate the idea and the hope that we had in building it, and creating a community gathering space here in Northeast.”

If you work up an appetite after partaking in all that Kraken has to offer, you’ll be able to enjoy food from local favorites, or enjoy a drink at their full bar — milk and Honest Juice are available for kids.

After being closed for nearly three years, the will reopen its doors this week with a new exhibit highlighting the Virginia city’s response to the murder of George Floyd.

The new exhibit, Preserving Their Names: , includes over 300 images, as well artifacts that were submitted to the museum by members of the community.

In May 2020, Audrey Davis, the director of the Alexandria Black History Museum, and her team, decided to document the community response in real time by putting out a call to city residents.

“We started what was then called the George Floyd collecting initiative, and we asked people after protests and vigils and just even their reactions, if they had any kind of artifact from what was going on, not only in Alexandria but across the DMV,” Davis said.

Digital photographs submitted for the Black Lives Matter Remembered Collection can be seen on monitors throughout the exhibit with quotes that also tell the story of what some characterize as an unprecedented time in history.

“We’re delighted that so many people, you know, shared with us and we’re still collecting,” said Deborah Coblenz, one of the curators for the exhibit.

When people are welcomed back, Davis wants the city to see their response, how their neighbors and friends responded and how people came out to protest. And, in the digital age where people take hundreds of photos, “What were the most important images to you that you sent to us that documented your your time?”

“I think I want people to take away not only what happened in 2020, but how things are still unfortunately happening and how they can make a difference in their community,” she said.

Davis asks that anyone who wants to become more active to do so through the

The Black Lives Matter Remembered Collection and the community is invited to continue submitting items.

The museum will reopen on Thursday. Regular operating hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.

Admission is free for Alexandria residents and $3 for nonresidents.

Maryland’s Howard Co. African American culture center reopens after 3 years /howard-county/2023/02/marylands-howard-co-african-american-culture-center-reopens-after-3-years/ Fri, 17 Feb 2023 10:41:51 +0000 /?p=24531611 This video is no longer available.

After being closed for three years, Maryland’s has reopened with new exhibits featuring a collection of art and artifacts, along with historical accounts of the county, the state and Africa.

From the COVID-19 pandemic to a flood at the facility, the center has dealt with a few setbacks in recent years, but aims continue its mission to educate the community about the county’s Black History.

“In a sense, COVID and the flood gave us a chance to take the time to regroup and really forge a new vision,” said Nathaniel “Nat” Alston, executive director of the Howard County Center of African American Culture.

A vision that includes themed exhibits that guide visitors through the new and improved space. One theme focuses on Africa and its connection to Black Americans in Howard County.

“When people walk in here, they can feel a sense of home, a sense of connection, a sense of ‘this is where it all began,’” Alston said. “We are from the Mother Continent of kings and queens.”

Another exhibit highlights citizenship, civil rights and the struggle for human rights. While detailing the African American experience in the county during their struggles for freedom, the museum also puts a spotlight on trailblazers, who are firsts to hold leadership roles in their respective industries.

“We hope that when people see this, they can see themselves there. And the fact that these people are still alive … hopefully it will inspire our students and young people,” Alston said.

The center held a soft opening on Tuesday, Feb. 15, and Tina Narr was among the group that got a sneak peek of the refurbished cultural center. Before her visit, she spent weeks attending lectures on African American history and culture in Howard County.

“I really think that the way it’s been curated into themes and rooms is very helpful and, you know, kind of leads you through a history of African Americans in this place. So it’s very nice,” Narr said.

The center, located in Columbia, will hold a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 28, to close out Black History Month.

Black History Month: Celebrating Arlington’s African American history /arlington/2023/02/black-history-month-celebrating-arlingtons-african-american-history/ Wed, 01 Feb 2023 11:33:34 +0000 /?p=24477156 This video is no longer available.

In Arlington, Virginia, lies a cultural gem created to preserve and celebrate the rich African American history in the Commonwealth.

Since the mid-90s, the has occupied a small space nestled in the county’s Columbia Pike neighborhood.

Inside the cultural enclave, visitors are given a chronological tour highlighting the experience and tenacity of a people on their “journey to freedom.”

“This is not about slavery. It’s about overcoming,” said Scott Taylor, president and director of the museum. “It’s an extraordinary story. It’s about bravery. It’s about triumph, and it all happened right here in Arlington.”

Taylor, who grew up in the area, acknowledges the space is smaller than most museums but recognizes that it also creates a unique opportunity.

“This is a safe haven. People come here, and we can have conversations,” he said. “We talk real talk here, and we’re able to be strong in the community because we are small. We work inside these walls and outside these walls.”

At the crux of the museum’s teachings are the history of Arlington’s Freedman’s Village and its importance in the community, Black Virginians, as well as their fight for equal rights and progress.

“This is history, and the beautiful thing about history, and especially ours, is that it brings everybody together,” he said.

In the midst of telling that story, homage is paid to four time Grammy-winning , and physician and blood preservationist Dr. Charles Drew, who both called Arlington County home.

Other exhibits touch on integration of public schools, Arlington’s lunch counter sit-ins and the Hall’s Hill community.

The museum is open on Thursdays and Saturdays, and general admission is free.

“Come in the museum, and I’ll give you a private tour,” Taylor said. “You’re going to learn some things that you’ve never read anywhere, and it’s going to be a surprise.”

A holiday cookie tour in the District’s Georgetown neighborhood was a creative push to get foot traffic into local retailers while providing participants with a sweet treat — and maybe a few gift ideas.

Anyone who purchased a $25 event ticket received a map to a dozen retailers who were paired with 12 local bakeries. Organizers of the event hoped to bring people inside small retailers, introduce them to a shop owner and maybe do some holiday shopping.

“The goal was to do something unique, something that is not happening in Georgetown and to capitalize on our strengths, which are our amazing bakeries,” Rachel Shank said.

Shank is the Executive director of , a nonprofit organization supporting small and local businesses along Wisconsin Avenue. She said she’s been ruminating about the idea since seeing the success of a similar event on Main Street in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The sold out tour included a performance at the welcome center by , Georgetown University’s premier all-gender a cappella group.

D.C. police released video of four people wanted for questioning in the death of a man who was killed by a stray bullet on 14th Street in Northwest Tuesday night.

“We certainly want to talk to them, find out what their involvement is in this and ultimately bring this very tragic case to a close for that family,” Police Chief Robert J. Contee said at a briefing Thursday.

Jeremy Black, 53, of Takoma Park, Maryland, was shot and killed as he was leaving dinner with his wife a few blocks from Logan Circle.

The video shows four people exiting what appears to be a white Chevrolet Equinox returning to the car and leaving the scene “in a hurry,” Contee said.

“We believe these individuals obviously are involved in this shooting, which is the reason why we released [the video],” Contee said.

Black was the father of two children and worked in the Inspector General’s Office of the Peace Corps, Ƶapp’s news partner reported.

Residents in the area said their windows and cars were damaged.

A police report said officers found evidence that a handgun and rifle were used in the incident.

Anyone with more information is asked to call the police at (202) 727-9099.

GW trustees approve renaming of university student center /dc/2021/06/gw-trustees-approve-renaming-of-university-student-center/ /dc/2021/06/gw-trustees-approve-renaming-of-university-student-center/#respond Wed, 30 Jun 2021 17:00:45 +0000 /?p=22536850 George Washington University’s Board of Trustees has approved the renaming of the university student center.

The board on Tuesday voted to remove the name of the Cloyd Heck Marvin Center, after a recommendation from a special committee assigned to address the issue.

Marvin, who served as university president from 1927 to 1959, supported racial segregation and tight controls over students’ freedom of speech on campus, the university said in a news release.

The Special Committee, composed of students, faculty, staff and alumni, said the case for the name change was “compelling” after reviewing historical material and feedback from the GW community.

The Marvin Center was named and dedicated in 1971; there were protests against naming the center after him at the time, the university said.

The Special Committee highlighted Dr. Marvin’s “discriminatory and exclusionary views and policies and the burden of that legacy on diversity and inclusion at GW today.”

“This is a significant moment of opportunity for GW to demonstrate our institutional willingness to make change when needed, to stand upon values of a pluralistic and welcoming community, and to refine and re-establish our commitment to inclusion,” the committee said in its report.

The building will be called the University Student Center, and the school will begin replacing signage and materials that reflect the name change.

“GW doesn’t change names lightly, and the board appreciates the hard work and consultation with the community that brought us to this point,” Board of Trustees Chair Grace Speights said in the statement.

University President Thomas LeBlanc, who established the Special Committee, said in the statement he heard the community, and the Marvin Center name does not represent the school’s values.

“This is an inclusive university, and we want the University Student Center to bring our students together and serve as a point of pride for the entire community,” he said.
