, WSCC Water began to use less water to help avoid a boil water advisory and preserve water in case of a fire.

WSCC said crews finished restoring water flow to the Camp Springs water tank Tuesday morning, but had still been urging limiter water use as the tank filled with water. The tanks have now reached a level where the advisory can be safely lifted.

The advisory impacted nearly 1,400 customers in the area. They had been asked to stop all outside water use, take shorter showers, limit flushing and the use of washers and dryers.

Parts of the D.C. area have been under an ongoing drought for weeks, with only brief relief after Tropical Depression Debby came through last week. Debby improved river levels and stream flows, which is what the Interstate Commission on the Potomac River Basin expected.

Alexandria looks into renaming confederate streets /alexandria/2023/10/alexandria-looks-into-renaming-confederate-streets/ Sat, 14 Oct 2023 02:28:35 +0000 /?p=25291068 In Virginia, the City of Alexandria is looking into renaming six streets with ties to the confederacy.

It’s part of a by Mayor Justin Wilson to rename streets with Confederate references.

“Our predecessors used street naming policies as a form of permanent protest against the burgeoning civil rights movement and growing political power for African-Americans. As a symbol, these honors persist today, honoring virulent racists, many of whom took up arms against our nation. These honors are not defensible and should be removed,” Wilson announcing the street renaming initiative.

Since then, 63 streets have been singled out, three of which will be chosen each year for renaming. The City Council Naming Committee said it determined the order of streets to be renamed “based on household and commercial impact as well as historical significance.”

Wilson said that he believed it was the right move for the city to take, calling the decision to slowly change the names “a reasonable, yet deliberate” decision.

“While it is important to remove these inappropriate honors, it is also important to consider the practical concerns as thousands of Alexandria residents and visitors use these existing street names to navigate our community,” Wilson said.

The current roads under consideration include North Breckinridge Place, North Frost Street and North and South Early Street.

Officials said a public hearing will be held on Nov. 30 so community members can weigh in on proposed names or suggest alternatives.

Five selected streets were named for Confederate military leaders after the city passed an ordinance in 1953, .

In a news release, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said older adults face greater risks during extreme weather events, “especially if they are living alone, are low-income, have a disability, or live in rural areas.”

According to the American Red Cross, there are several factors that make older adults more vulnerable after disaster strikes, including chronic conditions, a higher reliance on assistive devices such as walkers, and an increased likelihood that they are more socially isolated.

“FEMA is evolving the way we engage with communities to be more inclusive and impactful than ever before,” Criswell said, “which includes meeting older adults where they are and getting them the preparedness resources, they need and deserve.”

On the road again! Maryland’s MVA to resume normal operations for driving tests Tuesday /maryland/2023/06/on-the-road-again-marylands-mva-to-resume-normal-operations-for-driving-tests-tuesday/ Sat, 17 Jun 2023 12:11:19 +0000 /?p=24905028 In another sign of putting COVID-19 in the rearview mirror, the Maryland Department of Transportation announced that it’s going back to its pre-pandemic policy for driving tests on Tuesday.

The state’s Motor Vehicle Administration will be reopening on June 20.

After the agency finishes observing the Juneteenth federal holiday, drivers taking an exam will have a driving instructor sitting in the passenger seat, Friday.

Test takers will also be driving on an open road with an instructor — a shift from the pandemic-era closed-course driving that Marylanders may have gotten used to.

The state’s transportation department previously stationed instructors outside vehicles on those closed courses to test drivers.

In June 2022, MVA had agents inside passenger vehicles for all on-road testing.

“The course testing continued with the driver’s licensing agent outside the vehicle to ensure the applicant was prepared to drive on the roadway,” MVA said. “Now the examiner will be in the car during the entire on-course portion of the test.”

It happened near Arlington Boulevard and Patrick Henry Drive in the Seven Corners area.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said undercover narcotics officers were doing a drug investigation when they singled out a group of people sitting inside a car accused of illegally distributing drugs.

When officers approached the vehicle to arrest the suspects, they drove away “at a high rate of speed,” Davis said.

“Preliminarily, we know that the car that they were in took off, jumped a couple of curbs,” Davis said. “We blocked that car in, and one of our Fairfax County undercover detectives discharged his firearm during the apprehension effort to take these persons into custody.”

The man was shot in the arm during the attempted arrest. Davis said the man received a “non-fatal gunshot wound,” and he is expected to be OK.

No officers or witnesses were injured during the encounter.

Davis said the officer who fired his gun is now on routine administrative leave.

Police plan to release additional details on the investigation Wednesday morning.

Superior Court jury on Monday.

After a six-week trial, 22-year-old Quincy Garvin and 20-year-old Saquan Williams were found guilty of conspiracy, first-degree murder, participation in a criminal street gang and other charges.

In September of 2017, Garvin, Williams and two other men  24-year-old Carl Hardy in the Potomac Gardens neighborhood in Southeast.

The four men circled the neighborhood around 6 p.m., looking for “individuals to target,” a news release said. On their fourth trip around the block, Garvin, Williams and another man stepped out of the car and fired over 30 rounds into an open courtyard before driving off.

Hardy, struck by a bullet, was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Federal prosecutors said Garvin and Williams were members of a criminal street gang operating out of Wellington Park. Evidence presented in court showed that the gang had “beefs” with other people in the District.

In 2019, a grand jury indicted 11 people in connection to Hardy’s murder and the July 2018 murder of 10-year-old Makiyah Wilson.

A sentencing date for Garvin and Williams hasn’t been scheduled yet.

The money will help jumpstart construction of , Fairfax County’s new Route 1 Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.

Once completed, bus riders can travel from Fort Belvoir to the Huntington Metro Station, linking “a historically underserved section of the County to the region’s rapidly growing transit network,” the release said.
