GMU water pipe bursts after being used as pull-up bar

A man has admitted to doing a pull-up that busted a water pipe at George Mason University’s Arlington, Virginia, campus in late March.

Police said that on March 23 around midnight, the Arlington County Fire Department got a call to go to the Mason Square campus on 3300 Fairfax Drive about a broken pipe and water flooding the parking garage.

After an investigation by George Mason University’s police, video footage showed the man doing a pull-up on the pipe and breaking it. He, along with a group of people, were seen dancing before the incident took place.

The man turned himself in to accept responsibility for the incident, a spokesperson for George Mason University police told Ƶapp.

Moral of the story is ‘if you mess up, you fess up!’ and he led with that in doing the right thing,” said Emily Ross with George Mason University police.

Robert Mueller remembered for his nonpartisan leadership in transforming the FBI /government/2026/03/robert-mueller-remembered-for-his-nonpartisan-leadership-in-transforming-the-fbi/ Sun, 22 Mar 2026 00:10:54 +0000 /?p=29068773
Ƶapp National Security Correspondent J.J. Green joined Sandy Kozel to talk about Robert Mueller's career and legacy.

Experts are remembering Robert Mueller for his nonpartisan leadership in transforming the FBI into a terrorism-fighting force after the 9/11 attacks.

The former FBI director died Friday at the age of 81, according to a statement from his family. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2021.

Mueller was also the special counsel in charge of the Department of Justice’s investigation into the ties between Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russia.

“They remember him as a straight shooter, they remember him as an honest man, and they remember him as somebody who worked hard,” Ƶapp’s National Security Correspondent J.J. Green said about Mueller in an interview.

Mueller became the FBI director after his nomination by then-President George W. Bush, just a week before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. He was the head of the agency for 12 years, the longest-serving FBI director besides J. Edgar Hoover. Mueller worked under Bush and former President Barack Obama.

Green said that Mueller’s “career highlights are anchored in both crisis leadership and institutional transformation.”

During his FBI tenure, Mueller oversaw the agency’s transition “into a national security-focused agency, and expanded their counterterrorism and intelligence operations,” Green said, adding that investigating Trump’s ties to Russia placed him “again, in the center of a politically charged national moment.”

President Trump after hearing about his death, claiming he was glad the former special prosecutor who had investigated Trump had died, sparking outrage in U.S. media circles.

Mueller’s report on Trump’s Russian ties during his 2016 presidential campaign was released in 2019, and didn’t conclude the president had committed a crime, but didn’t exonerate him either.

“I’m sure there are other people who Robert Mueller may have been instrumental in putting behind bars … who may feel the same way,” Green said. “But I think the American public is going to know that right after 911 it was largely due to Robert Mueller’s expertise and capabilities and leadership that protected the nation and built this massive system that, by and large, works very well, that we call DHS (Department of Homeland Security) right now.”

Despite Trump’s disparagement, Mueller was highly regarded by people as a man of honor and integrity, according to Green.

During the latter part of his tenure as the FBI director, two terrorist attacks — the Boston Marathon bombing in April 2013 and the Fort Hood shootings in Texas — deeply affected Mueller because of his experience serving in Vietnam as a Marine officer from 1968 to 1971. According to Green, Mueller’s vulnerability revealed that he was human.

“Doing what he did in the way he served with the group that he served with, that kind of put a different approach in his mind about how to serve the nation after going through something like that and surviving it,” Green said.

Green said that he spent the entire 12 years of Mueller’s career trying to score an interview and never did one. When Green ran into the FBI chief at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado, “I told him that I had been trying to book him for an interview and I could never get through. And he said, ‘Well, you got me now.'”

“It kind of speaks to Bob Mueller,” Green said. “He really was just a straightforward kind of guy who believed in service.”

Police: Mother kills 2-year-old, husband, mother-in-law in Prince William Co. home /prince-william-county/2026/02/toddler-father-and-mother-in-law-stabbed-to-death-in-apparent-murder-suicide-in-woodbridge-home/ Mon, 23 Feb 2026 22:03:03 +0000 /?p=28958744 A mother killed her 2-year-old son, husband and mother-in-law before taking her own life inside the family’s Woodbridge, Virginia, home on Saturday, according to police.

Prince William County police arrived to the home in the 3400 block of Vale Court around 8 a.m. Saturday where they found the family of four stabbed to death in an apparent murder-suicide.

According to Monday, 35-year-old Ziyi Lu is believed to have attacked her family. Lu allegedly stabbed her mother-in-law, Kegang Xie, 69, and her husband, Danxiong Gao, 40.

An autopsy confirmed Lu, and the three other family members, died from “knife-related injuries.”

The couple’s 2-year-old son was also killed. The child won’t be publicly named because of his age, police said.

The grandfather of the 2-year-old discovered the family Saturday morning after the attack had unfolded, police said.

Col. Peter Newsham, Prince William County’s police chief, called the murder-suicide “the worst possible nightmare.”

“We don’t know the exact cause or the motive in this case, but just to see a family destroyed like this is horrific,” Newsham said Saturday.

Police said the weapon that was used in the stabbing was recovered.

Former congressional staffer from Maryland charged with stealing 240 government cellphones /maryland/2026/01/former-congressional-staffer-from-maryland-charged-with-stealing-240-government-cellphones/ Mon, 19 Jan 2026 16:07:45 +0000 /?p=28821596 A former congressional staffer from Glen Burnie, Maryland, is accused of stealing 240 government cellphones from the U.S. House of Representatives.

Christopher Southerland, 43, was arrested earlier this month and charged with stealing cellphones worth more than $150,000, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro’s office.

Southerland was a system administrator for the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure from April 2020 until July 2023 and had the power to order the devices for staff members of the committee.

, Southerland used his government position to order the devices and have them shipped to his Maryland home. He allegedly sold more than 200 of those phones to a local pawn shop.

At the time of the alleged thefts, there were only 80 members who worked on the committee.

Southerland told a worker at the pawn shop to sell the phones in parts to get around the government software that remotely detects its phones, prosecutors said.

Authorities were made aware of his scheme after one of the stolen phones was purchased off eBay. When the person who bought the phone turned it on, prosecutors said it showed the phone number of the House of Representatives Technology Service Desk.

The person who bought the device called the number, and other House employees then learned that phones bought by Southerland were unaccounted for, prosecutors said.

Frederick County installs new health vending machine, featuring naloxone, fentanyl test strips /frederick-county/2026/01/frederick-county-installs-new-health-vending-machine-featuring-naloxone-fentanyl-test-strips/ Sun, 18 Jan 2026 20:22:57 +0000 /?p=28819578 Maryland’s Frederick County Health Department will be installing a new health vending machine in the city, offering a variety of lifesaving resources free of charge.

The vending machine, located at Frederick’s Department of Housing and Services on 6040 New Design Road, will include naloxone, fentanyl test strips, as well as hygiene and wellness products.

“This vending machine has naloxone which can reverse an opioid overdose and save someone’s life,” Jessica Ellis, manager of the harm reduction and diversion programs at the Frederick County Health Department, said in .

“It also has a variety of other supplies that can help keep people safer.”

In 2024, the county’s health department installed four boxes of naloxone throughout the county as part of a pilot program, according to the department, which raised the total number of boxes to 12.

There have been over 5,100 doses of naloxone given to the public since then, the department said.

Stuart Campbell, director of the Department of Housing and Human Services, praised the county’s partnership. “As a vital access point for services that help residents with daily challenges, hosting this vending machine at our New Design Road location was a natural fit,” he said.

Frederick residents are not required to provide any identification, or speak to anyone to fill out an application for naloxone.

The health department is asking those struggling with addiction to call or text 988.

The National Ƶapp Service issued a wind advisory early Tuesday morning that was cancelled before 9 a.m.

However, conditions will remain blustery as northwest winds will gust up to 40 mph and wind chills in the teens and 20s. These strong winds could cause issues such as downed trees and a few power outages.

“Watch out for any debris on the roads, especially in some of the neighborhoods, since we’ve had such strong winds for quite some time,” 7News First Alert Meteorologist Eileen Whelan said.

The howling winds began Monday, bringing gusts between 20 and 30 mph through the evening hours.

Temperatures on Tuesday morning will remain in the 20s but will rise to the 30s in the afternoon. Even though winds will decrease gradually after sunset, they will fall back to the 20s during the evening hours.

New Year’s Eve should be a better day if you’re planning to do any outdoor activities with high temperatures up to the mid-40s, along with a mix of sun and clouds. However, it’ll be better to stay indoors to ring in the new year at night because temperatures will be near freezing.

The first day of 2026 will bring more freezing weather with temperatures in the 30s. With a cold front sliding through the morning, there could be a few snow flurries. However, Whelan said “little to no accumulation” is expected from the small storm.

Going into Friday and the weekend, temperatures will be around 40 degrees with plenty of sun in the forecast.

In historic shift, more Americans are distancing themselves from religion /lifestyle/2025/12/in-historic-shift-more-americans-are-distancing-themselves-from-religion/ Sat, 27 Dec 2025 22:34:52 +0000 /?p=28740391 Americans have become more and more detached from religious affiliations over the past decade, the fastest religious shift in modern history, polls show.

In an interview with Ƶapp, Axios reporter Russell Contreras cited data from a poll by the that says in 2024, 28% of Americans viewed themselves as “religiously unaffiliated.” That represents an increase from 16% in 2013, he said.

The PRRI poll sampled 40,000 adults living in the U.S. who gave their religious affiliation.

That drop in affiliation goes hand in hand with a historic number of churches closing in the United States, Contreras said.

“We expect 15,000 churches to close by the end of the year, and only four in 10 Americans under the ages of 18 to 29 identify as religiously unaffiliated. So this is a 38% increase — young people are just not going to church,” Contreras told Ƶapp.

The drop in churchgoing is particularly high among the Gen Z demographic in the United States, he said, pointing out that attendance among Gen Z men is flat, despite some saying it’s growing.

“But here’s the deal, Gen Z women are the ones who are not going to church. They’re more likely to identify as religiously unaffiliated, and that is alarming,” Contreras said. “Some church officials say if we lose women, especially young women, we will have a lot of trouble in the future.”

Russell Contreras, senior race and justice reporter for Axios, discusses the step decrease in churchgoing in the U.S.

Churches were important places to meet voters

The decline stems from numerous factors, such as political polarization and a lack of faith in institutions. As a result, the religious shift has made it harder for political parties and candidates to reach voters, according to Contreras.

He said that for many years, political parties knew where to go to rally votes, such as a local Catholic or Protestant church, and these places also served as voting precincts.

“It’s getting increasingly harder to outreach to voters when you had this particular community that was a mine for voters,” Contreras said. “Right now, political candidates are going to have to work very hard. Because the religiously unaffiliated don’t go to church, it’s hard to get them. You have to spend more money to outreach to them.”

So, who goes to church more, Republicans or Democrats?

Within the Republican Party, the largest group are white Christians, making up about 68% of the Party, Contreras said. Only 12% identify as religiously unaffiliated, he said, citing the PRRI poll.

On the Democratic side, 34% of Democrats are religiously unaffiliated, while Christians of color make up 35% of the party.

“The Democrats are very more religiously pluralistic, whereas the Republicans are mainly white Christians,” he said. “If that is true, Republicans will face a difficult challenge in the future with a declining base.”

Despite more Americans losing their love of religion, Bible sales have gone up 11% this year over 2024, according to data from Circana, which tracks book sales.

However, only 49% of Americans believe that religion is important in their lives, according to a .

It happened around 7:30 p.m. in the 2500 block of Baltimore Road, near Norbeck Road in Montgomery County.

Photos taken at the scene and shared by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer showed how the Safeway tractor-trailer rolled down a hill and went through a fence, stopping just short of hitting the apartment building.

Hazmat officials were called to assess the scene as the tractor-trailer’s saddle tanks ruptured during the incident, causing a fuel spill of over 60 gallons of diesel.

A driver called police around 9:45 a.m. when they saw what appeared to be a body near the intersection of Fairfax County Parkway and Old Plains Road in the Navy area. Fire and rescue department crews arrived and confirmed the man was dead.

The man, who has not yet been identified, had visible trauma to his body, police said during a news conference. Capt. Jesse Katzman, a spokesperson for the Fairfax County Police Department, said the man appeared to be about 50 years old.

“We are not sure how that trauma occurred or how that individual ended up in the location,” Katzman said, adding one “working theory” is that the man was hit by a car that drove off.

Katzman said evidence indicates the man had been there for a short time.

Rugby Road at Fairfax County Parkway reopened around 2 p.m.

“Fairfax County Parkway, historically, is an area that we have traffic enforcement on. There are accidents out here. We do have fatal accidents,” Katzman said. “So, we please ask everybody to be very aware of the surroundings, especially as it does get darker outside earlier in the day.”

Traffic changes during the holiday season in Virginia, Maryland /local/2025/12/record-breaking-holiday-travel-is-expected-in-the-dc-region-here-are-some-traffic-changes/ Mon, 22 Dec 2025 21:19:07 +0000 /?p=28728077 If you’re traveling on the road over the holiday season, you will certainly not be alone. AAA is expecting records to be broken through New Year’s Day.

They project that 2.5 million Marylanders and 3.4 million Virginians will be driving somewhere this week and the next. Experts are crediting lower gas prices as a motivating factor to hit the road over the holiday season.

“There’s going to be more traffic on the roadway. Obviously, it’s easier to travel. We did see that around Thanksgiving, during that holiday,” Charlie Gischlar, deputy director of communications with the Maryland State Highway Administration, told Ƶapp. “Just expect a lot of company on the roadways, and always give yourself plenty of time.”

Gischlar added that MDOT-SHA are doing some things to help relieve congestion.

To help ease the burden, there will be some traffic changes in the D.C. region to help bring the holiday spirit.

Maryland

In Maryland, there will be no lane closures for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge for Dec. 24-26 and Jan. 1, according to the .

On Monday and Tuesday from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., the westbound span could be closed due to maintenance work. As a result, there will be two-way traffic on the eastbound span.

Also on Monday and Tuesday, one lane of the eastbound span could be closed due to maintenance work from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“We also enhance our highway patrollers in a lot of areas that are really heavy because they can get on the scene quicker, remove disabled vehicle debris or help clear crashes to the shoulder and get those lanes open as soon as possible,” Gischlar said. “Those are some of the things that we’re doing to try to get out of people’s way and help keep traffic moving around the holidays.”

The westbound span could be closed for the following days and times:

  • Saturday, Dec. 27 — 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Sunday, Dec. 28 — 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Monday, Dec. 29, and Tuesday, Dec. 30 — 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Friday, Jan. 2 — 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
  • Saturday, Jan. 3 — 8 p.m. to 9 a.m.

The eastbound span could be closed for the following days and times:

  • Monday, Dec. 29, and Tuesday, Dec. 30 — 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Friday, Jan. 2 — 9 a.m. to noon

Virginia

In Virginia, the will make life easier for its resident travelers.

A lot of the highway work zones will be suspended, along with the temporary lane closures on Virginia’s interstates and major roads being lifted from noon on Wednesday to noon on Friday, and from noon on Wednesday, Dec. 31, to noon on Friday, Jan. 2.

But travelers could come across semi-permanent work zones that will stay in place, despite the lifted lane closures.

Virginia residents can look to for any travel alerts. They can also check out the .

Tips on driving safely on the roadways during the holidays include putting on your seat belt, not looking at your phone while driving and leaving early for extra time to get to your destination.

The shelter’s officers were able to free the fox from the fence, but it had suffered injuries to it’s rear legs. The fox was taken to the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center for treatment.

The shelter said foxes are increasingly interacting with suburban and urban neighborhoods as “human development expands.” Shelter officials recommended keeping an eye out for foxes around dawn and dusk, and keeping your distance as foxes are happier left alone.

The shelter said to call 703-691-2131 if you find a fox that isn’t behaving well or looks sick.
