Police say the first robbery occurred in front of Tydings Hall; the second, in front of Tawes Hall, the third outside Queen Anne’s Hall.

Police say they are unsure whether the same person was involved in these robberies.

In the first incident, police say the suspect was wearing a black mask, black clothing and white shoes and implied that they had a weapon. The suspect in the second incident was reported to be wearing a black mask and black clothing, and was armed with a black handgun.

Police say in the third robbery, the suspect showed a weapon.

Campus police are warning people to stay from these areas while authorities investigate and search for the suspect or suspects.

“I got the alerts on my phone and of course I was scared and nervous,” said Hannah Phillips, an employee on campus. “This stuff doesn’t happen often.”

“It’s scary,” said Ryan Hearty, a student taking a summer course. “I guess it’s something that every college campus has to watch out for. I’ll probably just be a little more aware.”

The staged plane crash will happen in the area of Freeway Airport. Fire officials say it is very likely that commuters on nearby U.S. 50 and other local roadways will be able to see the smoke and hear the pyrotechnics.

Fire and EMS crews will be on scene as a precaution.

County fire officials say they anticipate a higher volume of 911 calls in relation to the production. Those in the neighboring area are still advised to call 911 if they feel there is an emergency unrelated to the production.

Viewers vent about PBS deception during 'A Capitol Fourth'

WASHINGTON — Many who were watching PBS’s broadcast of “A Capitol Fourth” noticed something was a little “off” when they aired footage of the fireworks show in the nation’s capital showing clear skies.

The rain took its toll on Fourth of July fireworks plans around the nation’s capital , but the National Mall fireworks show still went on as scheduled.

Clouds made for poor visibility for those watching the fireworks show in the District, which caused some confusion for viewers at home when PBS showed clear skies for the show during its live broadcast.

Many users on Twitter, some using the hashtag, pointed out other errors like the missing scaffolding from the U.S. Capitol dome.

PBS responded with the following tweet:

PBS backed off the patriotism angle a few hours later:

NWS confirms tornado touched down in Howard Co. /howard-county/2016/06/nws-confirms-tornado-touched-down-in-howard-co/ /howard-county/2016/06/nws-confirms-tornado-touched-down-in-howard-co/#respond Wed, 22 Jun 2016 11:10:28 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=9151141 WASHINGTON — The National Ƶapp Service confirmed that a tornado touched down in Howard County Tuesday afternoon.

Matt Elliott, a NWS meteorologist, tells Ƶapp that the “high-end EF0” tornado touched down at 1:29 p.m. and lifted at 1:48 p.m.

“Anything more than 10 minutes, especially for around here, is a fairly long time for a tornado to last,” Elliott said.

In those nearly 20 minutes, the tornado traveled 12.75 miles, traveling across the western and central portions of the county.

“Most of our tornadoes here are quick spinups, so it is rare for it to have a somewhat long track in terms of 10 miles or so,” Elliott said. “It’s not something that happens very often.”

The tornado had winds of up to 80 mph with a path width of 500 yards.

According to the NWS, the initial touchdown occurred near the intersection of Old Annapolis Road and St. Michaels Road, just southwest of Lisbon. Properties there sustained tree damage with multiple trees snapped, uprooted and topped in multiple directions. A large garage had its doors bowed by the wind and small objects were lifted, the NWS says.

The tornado continued toward the southeast, passing through the areas of Glenwood and Glenelg, before lifting just before Ellicott City in the vicinity of Manor Lane and Carroll Mill Road.

Elliott says the tornado caused mainly tree damage and very little structural damage.

The Howard County Public School System says in a statement that there will be no summer school at Howard High School on Wednesday due to a power outage. Classes at Oakland Mills High School and the Applications and Research Lab will open on time.

Seven other county school buildings — Glenelg High School, Marriotts Ridge High School, West Friendship Elementary School, Manor Woods Elementary School, Triadelphia Ridge Elementary School, Swansfield Elementary School and Rockburn Elementary School — were also without power, the school system says, and camps at locations without power were canceled.

Man charged in daughter, son-in-law’s deaths in Annandale /fairfax-county/2016/06/2-killed-in-annandale-shooting/ /fairfax-county/2016/06/2-killed-in-annandale-shooting/#respond Thu, 09 Jun 2016 02:11:15 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=8921781 WASHINGTON — A man has been charged with murder after police say he shot and killed his daughter and her husband in Annandale, Virginia.

Hiep Van Le, 67, has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder.

Fairfax County police say an argument began between Le and his son-in-law, 45-year-old Dang Ngo, and escalated when his daughter, 40-year-old Sophia Le, became involved.

Hiep Van Le then allegedly pulled out a gun and started shooting.

Ngo was struck and killed outside the home, and police say Sophia Le was injured inside the home.

Reports of the shooting Wednesday triggered a heavy police response — patrol officers, SWAT, police dogs and a police helicopter — to the 3400 block of Beverly Drive at around 1:30 p.m.

Police then found Sophia Le injured inside the home. She was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, but later died from her injuries.

Hiep Van Le was also found inside the home and taken into custody. Two young girls and a teenaged boy were home at the time. Police say they were not injured.

Police say Hiep Van Le and the victims all lived at the home.
