Why you might rethink getting that puppy for Christmas /christmas-news/2016/12/might-rethink-getting-puppy-christmas/ /christmas-news/2016/12/might-rethink-getting-puppy-christmas/#respond Sun, 18 Dec 2016 03:26:18 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=11817546 WASHINGTON — If you’re thinking about gifting your loved one an animal for Christmas, you might want to put that decision on hold.

Lauren Lipsey, director of rehoming for Humane Rescue Alliance, said that picking a pet should be a group decision and no choices should be made without the consent and full preparation of the person who will be taking care of the animal.

Lipsey said that the Alliance’s biggest fear is that the animal that is adopted eventually ends up unwanted, and that is more likely to happen if the person who is given the adopted animal did not even indicate they wanted an animal in the first place.

In lieu of purchasing a pet for Christmas, Lipsey said that you can, instead, give your loved one a card or any other stocking stuffer letting your loved one know that you are willing to cover the adoption fee of an animal of their choice. Then, you and your loved one can go to the adoption center together and make a fun day of preparing to welcome in a new buddy.

While adopted animals are returned every so often for a variety of reasons, Lipsey said that the team wants to decrease the chances of that happening, primarily by making sure that the caregivers are fully prepared to take care of their new friend, especially during the winter season.

One thing people sometimes neglect to think about is how to properly care for a pet when taking them outside in the cold. Lipsey said that letting animals outside should really only be for your pet’s bathroom break and that salt on the roads can easily get caught in an animal’s paws, which can make walking and other activities very painful.

“If it’s cold for you, it’s cold for your animal,” said Lipsey.

Lipsey encourages those interested in adopting a new pet to come in to one of the Alliance’s adoption centers and have a conversation with an employee about what they’re looking for in a pet and their ideal lifestyle. While there, employees can help potential pet-owners make the best match possible.

“It’s an opportunity for people to spend the time that we encourage people to take to find their new best friend,” Lipsey said.

The Humane Rescue Alliance has two adoption centers as well as dozens of foster homes in the area and offers many types of animals for adoption, including dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, snakes and turtles.

WASHINGTON — Photographs allow us to capture memories as they unfold and have the power to open our eyes to parts of the world that we have never imagined.

As a tribute to this powerful work, the folks at the in Northwest D.C. have teamed up with  to host this year’s  (Nov. 12-20), a hub dedicated to celebrating art and photography, providing exposure for photographers worldwide.

One of the most anticipated exhibits is  which runs now through April 30, 2017, highlighting the best Instagram photos by Nat Geo photographers.

Since the founding of the organization, the National Geographic Society’s photographs have brought awe and inspiration to many. Now, with the rising popularity of the media-sharing app Instagram, more and more people are capturing, viewing and sharing global moments than ever before.

National Geographic’s Instagram account, , was opened in 2012, and is now one of the app’s top-followed accounts, with more than 63 million followers and more than 1 billion likes on its 12,300 posts.

The @NatGeo exhibit displays more than 200 of the account’s most popular photographs, ranging from competitive water skiers to a glorious and haunting supermoon.

When visitors first walk into the @NatGeo exhibit, they are welcomed by a man-sized iPhone, displaying a magnified view of the @NatGeo Instagram account.

Alan Parente, creative director for exhibitions and global experiences at the National Geographic Society and curator of the @NatGeo exhibition, says that the layout of the exhibit’s design symbolizes how we get “lost” in social media.

“We created a maze,” Parente told ĂŰĚŇĘÓƵapp. “We decided to shrink everyone down so that you’re actually entering the feed.”

The @NatGeo exhibit is a colorful, dazzling playground, featuring 30-foot-by-30-foot boxes stacked on top of each other in various themes around the room, displaying the Instagram photos and their corresponding descriptions in larger-than-life view.

The exhibit also offers eight little nooks where visitors can sit and look at each Instagram photo and hear the photographer’s description. If the photo strikes an emotional chord, visitors can actually record their own thoughts and feelings on the photo. Selected visitor recordings will be placed at the end of the original photographer’s recording, allowing visitors to become a part of the exhibit.

Kathryn Keane, vice president for exhibitions at the National Geographic Society, said the organization has also published a commemorative @NatGeoas a hardback collection of all of the photographs displayed in the @NatGeo exhibit. Keane says the book “provides a photo show of the terrific and intrepid photographers who have defined this institution for so many years.”

National Geographic photographer fellow Cory Richards is the official spokesperson for the book and his work is prominently featured in the exhibit. He’s been working with the National Geographic Society since 2009. He became a photographer after overcoming a tumultuous adolescence and found that rock climbing and photography gave him a visual tool to document the human struggle.

Richards is enthusiastic about technology allowing people to instantly become photographers.

“Bring it on,” he said. “We need to see this exhibit as a fun, interesting, new way to engage … with social media, but also take it as a real time to stop, pause and think about the impacts these images have. They literally can change the planet, and I think this is a very beautiful reminder of exactly that.”

The @NatGeo is on sale everywhere books are sold, including at the exhibit.

Tickets for the exhibits start at $15 and can be bought at .

Costumed kids take over zoo after hours for trick-or-treat event /dc/2016/10/costumed-kids-take-zoo-hours-trick-treat-event/ /dc/2016/10/costumed-kids-take-zoo-hours-trick-treat-event/#respond Sat, 22 Oct 2016 16:29:52 +0000 http://wtop.com/?p=10968166 WASHINGTON — Children in princess dresses and firefighter uniforms peered over the zoo fences to sneak a peek at the cheetahs and zebras at the 18th-annual Boo at the Zoo event at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Woodley Park.

Boo at the Zoo, sponsored by Mars Chocolate NA and run by Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ), is a family-focused trick-or-treat event where families can dress up and collect treats at the zoo after normal hours. The event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. through Sunday.

This year, families were in for a special treat: the Spooky Safari. Here, children could explore the nocturnal side of the zoo and were encouraged to find tracks and explore how certain animals survive in a nocturnal environment.

“We love to help educate and inspire the little ones so they can become the next generation of conservationists,” said Lynn Mento, executive director of FONZ.

FONZ also partnered with the Teal Pumpkin Project this year for kids with food allergies. Treat stations sporting a teal pumpkin sticker offered nonfood treats, such as glow sticks and stickers, for children with food allergies.

“It’s a wonderful way to be inclusive for the whole community for families who have children with food allergies,” Mento said. “When they go through the zoo … and they see at the treat stations the teal pumpkin stickers, they’ll know that those are treat stations that are completely safe for their kids.”

While tickets and parking passes sold out for Saturday night, families can still buy tickets for Sunday here.

Proceeds from the event will go toward FONZ’s work with the Smithsonian National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in their efforts to save species around the world.

Metro riders can take the Red Line to Woodley Park-Zoo or Cleveland Park to reach the event.
