“Quite a few resources are deployed in cases like this,” Piringer said.

A sign at the start of the difficult Billy Goat A Trail reads, “If you are tired, low on water, or unprepared for a very strenuous hike, please turn back.”

The Billy Goat trail is very popular among hikers, but it’s also where a lot injuries happen.

The terrain includes sharp drops, with trails along edges of rocks and jumps across open areas.

A woman lost control of her SUV and drove into a University Park, Maryland, home while attempting to flee from a traffic stop. (ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp/Melissa Howell)

A woman has died in University Park, Maryland, after striking a house in what police said began as an attempt to evade law enforcement during a traffic stop early Monday.

Prince George’s County police identified the woman as Jennifer Sorto, 30, of Woodbridge, Virginia.

Around 12:30 a.m., police said officers were in the area of Adelphi Road and Van Buren Street when they noticed a driver in a red SUV who seemed to not be wearing a seat belt.

They attempted a traffic stop, and the driver of the SUV came to a brief stop. But when officers got out of their vehicle and walked toward the SUV, police said, Sorto then drove off.

There wasn’t a pursuit, police said, because Sorto had driven out of sight of the officers. But they did canvass the immediate area in search for the SUV.

Minutes later, officers found the SUV overturned in a front yard in the 7100 block of College Heights Drive, police said. A male passenger was standing outside of the car, but Sorto was still inside. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. No one in the house was injured.

Investigators believe Sorto struck an unoccupied parked car, skidded sideways and flipped before hitting the home, police said. Excessive speed and road and weather conditions played a part in the crash.

Police said they are still investigating, and are working to figure out whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp’s Melissa Howell reported a tow truck was on scene at 5:30 a.m., removing the SUV from the side of the building:

Anyone with information about this crash can call the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit at 301-731-4422 or.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp’s Melissa Howell reported from University Park, Maryland.

Construction worker hit by crane at Montgomery Co. Purple Line site /montgomery-county/2019/12/construction-worker-hit-by-crane-at-montgomery-co-purple-line-site/ /montgomery-county/2019/12/construction-worker-hit-by-crane-at-montgomery-co-purple-line-site/#respond Fri, 06 Dec 2019 19:27:19 +0000 /?p=20500195 A construction worker was seriously injured after he was hit by a crane at a Purple Line construction site in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Pete Piringer, a spokesman for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue said the man was working at a construction site behind Montgomery County District Court when the slowly moving crane struck him at about 11:30 a.m.

The man suffered what were described “traumatic injuries” that were not believed to be life-threatening. He was taken to a nearby trauma center.

“He did receive a traumatic injury to lower extremities,” said Piringer. “What we call priority two injury, traumatic injury but not life-threatening.”

The construction site was located on Apple Avenue near Second Avenue.

The Purple Line intends to link the transit hubs of New Carrollton in Prince George’s County and Bethesda in Montgomery County. After initial projections set the rail line to be completed in the spring of 2022, it’s now projected to open about a year later, with some stations opening in phases.

Check back later for updates on this developing story.

A fire tore through a historic, almost 100-year-old restaurant in Olney, Maryland, Tuesday evening.

The Olney Ale House at 2000 Sandy Spring Road caught fire shortly before 6 p.m.

The fire broke out in the kitchen and then spread to the second floor of the restaurant.

“Fire and flames broke out through the roof area,” Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer told ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp.

About 70 firefighters were dispatched to the scene and the restaurant had to be evacuated.

A firefighter was treated and released after he got overheated and dehydrated fighting the fire, but no one else was injured.

Investigators believe the fire was accidental. Combustible items were too close to the stove and grill.

The fire didn’t affect most of the dining and bar area, but there is significant damage to the kitchen and water in the basement.

Damages are estimated to be up to $250,000.

The Olney Ale House adopted its current name in the 1970s but has been open for almost 100 years.

Below is a map of the area where the fire happened.

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵapp’s Melissa Howell contributed to this report.
