Prince George’s County Police said in a Saturday release that, of the 66 offenses, Simpson was charged with 16 counts of attempted first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted second-degree murder. Officials did not name the other 34 charges.

Authorities said additional charges may be pending.

Police Chief George Nader said officers received reports around 2:30 p.m. Friday of a man with a gun shooting from a car in the 5100 block of Pierce Avenue in College Park.

Around 2:50 p.m., Nader said Simpson shot at a 64-year-old man in a car, and that the shots shattered the glass window which cut the man’s face.

Shortly after that, officers received a call for a car accident in the area of 67th Avenue and Patterson Street in the East Riverdale area around 3 p.m. Nader said Simpson got out of the crashed vehicle and began shooting at people in the area, injuring at least five people.

Simpson later shot at and carjacked a woman in the area of Good Luck Road and Kenilworth Avenue in Riverdale Park.

“At that carjacking, an off-duty Prince George’s County Police officer, who was unarmed in his personal vehicle, who was alerted that there was a shooting going on in the area by his wife, who is also a police officer, observed the carjacking … and began to follow the suspect, ” Nader said.

When police arrived in the 900 block of Edmonston Road, Simpson got out of the vehicle and fired at the off-duty officer. U.S. Park Police arrived on the scene and Simpson pointed the gun at them.

“We believe that he was out of bullets at that time. He dropped the weapon and was taken into custody with no additional shots being fired,” Nader said.

Nader added that officials have recovered the AR-15 rifle that Simpson was using.

Police said two victims have been transported to a hospital for treatment, with one in critical condition and the other with life-threatening injuries. Authorities said there is no threat to the community and there are no outstanding suspects.

Simpson was also transported to a hospital with injuries Nader said he sustained in the car accident.

“I’ve not seen bravery like that in my 33 years of service,” Nader said of the unarmed off-duty officer who followed the shooter.

Nearby schools in the area were due to police activity. The lockdown was lifted for most of the schools around 4:25 p.m.

Ƶapp Traffic reporter Dave Dildine said at least three Maryland state highways were partially or completely blocked by various police agencies, including Route 193 Greenbelt Road at Kenilworth Avenue, Route 201 Kenilworth Avenue at Campus Drive and Route 410 Riverdale Road under the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.

2 Maryland residents exposed to hantavirus while traveling near infected passenger /maryland/2026/05/2-maryland-residents-exposed-to-hantavirus-while-traveling-near-infected-passenger/ Tue, 12 May 2026 09:30:35 +0000 /?p=29243291 Maryland health leaders are monitoring two residents who may have been exposed to hantavirus during international travel.

The possible exposure is tied to a flight that included a passenger from the cruise ship where the started.

The two Maryland residents were not passengers on the ship and are being monitored out of an abundance of caution. Experts with the stressed the risk to the public remains very low.

The incubation period for hantavirus can range from four to 42 days, which is why health officials continue monitoring people who may have been exposed. Asymptomatic individuals are not considered infectious, according to state and federal health officials.

Dr. Kari Debbink, a scientist at Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health, told Ƶapp the strain identified in recent reports, the Andes virus, is the only known strain of hantavirus that can spread from person to person.

No cases have been reported in Maryland since 2019, and none have involved this strain. With the Andes virus, MDH said person-to-person transmission “is rare and generally requires close, prolonged contact with an infected individual or their bodily fluids.”

Most hantavirus cases in the United States are linked to contact with rodents. The Andes virus, which has been reported primarily in South America, is unusual because of its limited potential for person-to-person spread.

“I think what we’re seeing is on par with what we would expect for this particular virus,” Debbink said, adding that the low risk to the public means people shouldn’t panic.

“This is a virus that doesn’t spread super efficiently between people. In past outbreaks with Andes virus, what we’ve seen is that it spreads between people that have come into close and prolonged contact. This isn’t something that spreads as readily as COVID or flu, for instance,” Debbink said.

At least 10 confirmed or suspected cases of hantavirus have been linked to the cruise ship outbreak, including three deaths, according to public health officials.

Health officials are conducting contact tracing connected to the cruise ship, and passengers returning home are being monitored by health officials in their home states, including Virginia.

The Maryland Department of Health said it is coordinating with federal and international partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as the investigation continues.

One Virginian was among the 17 Americans aboard the cruise ship and is now at home being monitored for symptoms.

Health officials said anyone who develops symptoms such as fever, fatigue or shortness of breath after recent international travel should contact a healthcare provider.

“As long as we’re not seeing cases pop up outside of (the World Health Organization’s) contact tracing, we’re in pretty good shape. So far, all the cases have been associated with people that were on the ship,” Debbink said.

Man shot and killed by police after barricade inside Arlington convenience store /virginia/2026/05/man-shot-by-police-after-barricade-situation-inside-arlington-convenience-store/ Sat, 09 May 2026 02:34:33 +0000 /?p=29232861 A man was shot by police after barricading himself inside a 7-Eleven in Arlington, Virginia, on Friday night.

He was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries where he later died on Saturday, according to a from Arlington County Police. No other injuries were reported.

Around 6:15 p.m. Friday, police responded to the 3600 block of Columbia Pike near South Monroe Street for reports of a “disorderly individual,” police spokeswoman Ashley Savage said at a news conference Friday night.

When they arrived, they found the man outside the convenience store yelling at patrons. He pulled out a knife toward responding officers, Savage said.

Savage said the man ignored police commands and entered the store. Arlington police said that all customers and employees safely exited the store.

“Over the next several hours, the suspect remained barricaded in the back of the business,” she said, adding that police tried to negotiate with him to exit the store.

While attempting to arrest the man, police said he pulled out a knife around 9 p.m. That’s when two officers fired their weapons, striking him multiple times.

The Northern Virginia Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the shooting, as well as other regional agencies. Both officers involved were placed on administrative leave, following department policy.

Former Chinatown Walgreens manager sentenced to nearly 3 years for inside-job robberies /dc/2026/05/former-chinatown-walgreens-manager-sentenced-to-nearly-3-years-for-inside-job-robberies/ Fri, 08 May 2026 21:30:36 +0000 /?p=29231778 The former manager of a Walgreens in D.C.’s Chinatown neighborhood was sentenced Thursday to 32 months in prison for her part in a coordinated string of robberies at the store.

London Teeter, 22, of D.C., was employed as the store manager when she took part in seven inside-job robberies with three other people. She pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce by robbery in February 2025.

Over the span of nine months, from July 2023 to February 2024, Teeter, along with Michael Robinson and Kamanye Williams, 26, relayed information about cash transfers inside the store to Gianni Robinson, Michael’s nephew. Gianni would then pass that information along to Williams, who would take money from the safe in the manager’s office at gunpoint.

Teeter knew the timing of the cash transfers and would allow a masked gunman, Williams, to rob the store’s employees using a code she provided.

Michael Robinson, 35, the second manager at the store, was sentenced to 12 years behind bars in October 2025. Teeter and he would take turns being the victim of the robberies because they knew the crimes were being recorded on surveillance cameras.

During the last robbery, Williams was shot by a special police officer hired by Walgreens to protect the business. In a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for D.C., prosecutors said Teeter was aware the special officers were hired and that a co-conspirator had robbed one of them of a firearm.

“London Teeter was a key architect of a seven-month scheme that repeatedly turned her own workplace into a crime scene,” U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro said in “The sentencing guidelines called for 87-to-108 months. This sentence, which is significantly lighter, does little to protect the citizens of the District.”

Pirro’s office had originally requested a 100-month (over eight-year) prison sentence.

In total, Teeter and her co-conspirators stole about $29,000.

After her 2-year and eight-month sentence, Teeter will serve three years of supervised release.

21-year-old African lion dies at Smithsonian National Zoo /dc/2026/05/21-year-old-african-lion-dies-at-smithsonian-national-zoo/ Thu, 07 May 2026 21:32:12 +0000 /?p=29226555 Shera, a 21-year-old African lion kept at the Smithsonian National Zoo in D.C., has died.

In a news release, the zoo said staff had become concerned about her ability to safely move in recent weeks as she became weaker.

Shera arrived at the D.C. zoo in 2006 with her sister Nababiep from a private reserve in South Africa, and a young male named Luke. She would later welcome eight cubs over her lifetime with Luke, and become one of the two oldest living lions in Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoos.

Luke was humanely euthanized at age 17 in October 2022.

Two of Shera and Luke’s male offspring, Shaka and Jumbe, can be seen at the zoo’s Great Cats exhibit.

“The decision to euthanize an animal is never taken lightly and never conducted independently. Multiple teams — including the animal husbandry team and veterinary team — work together to assess the animal’s quality of life,” the zoo said in a release on Tuesday.

Keepers at the zoo had been managing pain level but said they knew her health would continue to deteriorate.

“Geriatric care required considerable time spent managing Shera with extra TLC, and she loved the attention. Shera was adored and will be greatly missed,” Leigh Pitsko, assistant curator of Great Cats, said.

Dept. of Justice investigating Fairfax County’s top attorney over handling of cases involving immigrants /fairfax-county/2026/05/dept-of-justice-investigating-fairfax-countys-top-attorney-over-handling-of-cases-involving-immigrants/ Thu, 07 May 2026 01:42:19 +0000 /?p=29222890 The Department of Justice said Wednesday it was initiating an investigation into Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano over his office’s handling of cases involving undocumented immigrants.

In , Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division Harmeet Dhillon said the DOJ is investigating whether his office violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and the Safe Streets Act, which both “prohibit recipients of Federal financial assistance from discriminating based upon race, color, or national origin.”

The investigation, it said, would also determine if Descano’s office “discriminated against United States citizens by offering preferential treatment only to illegal alien criminal defendants.”

In a , Dhillon said her office would “not allow local prosecutors to pick and choose winners based on their immigration status,” and would work to see if Descano’s legal decisions have put “the community at risk in offering sweetheart deals to illegal immigrants charged with serious crimes.”

The policy in question was adopted by Descano’s office in 2020 as part of its guidelines for plea bargaining. It instructs assistant Commonwealth’s attorneys to “consider immigration consequences where possible” and states that “prosecutors shall consider … the collateral immigration consequences of the specific crime(s) the defendant is charged with.”

The webpage detailing the policy is no longer publicly available on his office’s website.

Descano did not respond to Ƶapp’s requests for comment but defended his policies in “Today, I received notice of a Department of Justice investigation into my office regarding one of our policies. My policies are fair, legal, and reflect the values of my community.”

Washington Post reporter Salvador Rizzo told Ƶapp’s Nick Iannelli that a second prong of the investigation is a “pattern and practice investigation” that usually leads to strict reforms, especially when used against police departments that have constitutional policing issues.

“Since Descano was first elected in 2019, there has been a lot of conservative pushback to some of his decisions when he’s seeking particular sentences for defendants who might be deported, depending on the seriousness of the crime that he charges,” Rizzo said.

Critics have said that Descano’s office has offered more lenient plea deals to undocumented immigrants accused of serious felonies so they avoid deportation.

“He’s become much more vocal, especially this year, in defending his policies,” Rizzo said.

Along with Arlington County Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Dehghani-Tafti, another local Democratic prosecutor, Descano has been the recent target of the House Judiciary subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security and Enforcement. He’s scheduled to testify before the subcommittee next week.

“Descano has been, at first, I think, a little bit just dismissive and maybe even indifferent about these accusations. And now he sees a need to really more strongly speak up for himself and defend these policies as legal,” Rizzo said.

Florida man faces charges after ending multiday protest atop DC’s Frederick Douglass bridge /dc/2026/05/man-comes-down-from-dcs-frederick-douglass-bridge-wednesday-ending-6-day-protest/ Wed, 06 May 2026 16:15:21 +0000 /?p=29218793
Man comes down from DC’s Frederick Douglass bridge

The Florida man who scaled the Frederick Douglass Bridge in Southwest D.C. last week has been charged after ending his protest atop the bridge as it entered a sixth day, police tell Ƶapp.

With the assistance of D.C. Fire and EMS, Guido Reichstadter, 45, left his perch at the top of the bridge just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, after climbing the bridge barefoot on Friday.

He’s been charged with crowding, obstructing, or incommoding; unlawful entry and failure to obey an officer, according to D.C. police.

Reichstadter packed up his belongings, trekked down part of the bridge and then got into the basket of a fire truck, hoisted up to meet him partway.

After he stepped down into that basket, it appears first responders seemingly restrained Reichstadter by his hands.

A spokesman for the fire department told Ƶapp that Reichstadter was brought to a nearby hospital to be checked out, but he isn’t believed to be injured.

Reichstadter scaled one of the bridge’s arches Friday as police and bystanders watched. He unfurled a long black banner and said in posts on social media he was protesting artificial intelligence and the wars in Iran and Palestine.

D.C. police previously confirmed to Ƶapp that the Florida man had previously climbed the same bridge after Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022.

In a Tuesday, Reichstadter said he had run out of water on Sunday and would be coming down from the bridge.

“I hope that this action has offered something to motivate and inspire you, and that it can serve as fuel for greater commitment and action in the cause of peace and in the fight for our future,” he wrote.

The bridge was briefly closed in both directions as first responders worked to get Reichstadter down Wednesday morning. Ƶapp’s Traffic Center reported that all lanes were closed at around 9:10 a.m., and the bridge reopened around 30 minutes later.

His ascent had a significant impact on the Friday afternoon rush hour; authorities had shutdown the bridge in both directions for several hours.

D.C. Fire and EMS said a high‑angle technical rescue team has been working with police since Friday afternoon.

Reichstadter told Ƶapp’s Alan Etter that he had considered coming down on Monday but was able to find the “stamina to stay up here a bit longer” and a method to charge his phone.

Multiple high-ranking DC police leaders placed on leave after crime stats probe /dc/2026/05/multiple-high-ranking-dc-police-leaders-demoted-after-crime-stats-probe/ Tue, 05 May 2026 22:40:02 +0000 /?p=29217038 Thirteen officials within D.C.’s police department were placed on administrative leave Monday after an internal investigation into allegations of manipulated crime data.

At a news conference Tuesday, interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said 13 officials were placed on administrative leave due to the “allegations of misconduct.” He said he was unable to share further details about the suspensions.

“All 13 members were served … a notice of proposed adverse action,” Carroll said. “No one was fired.”

“I cannot get into any specifics of the investigation. The administrative process must be allowed to take its course, and that process is outlined in our MPD general orders,” he said.

Carroll also announced the replacements of some of the high-ranking members of the department who were suspended.

Former Fourth District Cmdr. Nikki Lavenhouse was promoted to assistant chief of Patrol Services South; Cmdr. Christopher Dorsey was named the commander of the Second District, and Cmdr. David Hong was named the Fourth District commander.

Dorsey replaces Cmdr. Tatjana Savoy and Lavenhouse replaces Assistant Chief LaShay Makal. According to multiple reports, Makal and Savoy were suspended as part of the crime statistics investigation.

According to internal department documents shared with Ƶapp, Cmdr. Duncan Bedlion, Capt. Nathaniel Porter and Capt. Brian Hallahan are among the other members reassigned to new positions. The impacted divisions include Patrol Services North, Patrol Services South (formerly headed by Makal), the Office of the Field Commander (formerly led by Dorsey), the Youth and Family Engagement Division (previously led by Cmdr. Sharde Harris) and the Cadet Corps Branch (previously led by Inspector Michael Jones Sr.).

“MPD cannot provide specific information on the findings of internal investigations or proposed adverse actions against specific members. Our internal affairs bureau has completed an investigation to crime reporting,” Carroll said.

Still, Carroll cited the department data that showed a decrease in crime since 2023.

“We have made meaningful progress over the last three years in reducing crime. Homicides, shootings and carjackings have fallen steadily since 2023. My top priority continues to be fighting crime, building relationships with the community, and supporting the great work to make the city safer,” he said.

In a statement in response to the department’s action, the D.C. police union cited findings from National Incident-Based Reporting System data that showed a nearly 2% increase in violent crime in D.C. in 2024, compared with D.C.’s cited 28% decrease. The police union said the alleged manipulation endangered public safety and called Monday’s action “long-overdue.”

In January, the D.C. Inspector General announced its investigation into the police department’s crime data reporting system — a system already under scrutiny at the time following claims by President Donald Trump that crime in D.C. was much worse that what statistics showed.

“We use crime statistics every day to help us with deployment across the city. I do have confidence in those numbers,” Carroll said. “We don’t want to minimize any crime. Obviously, we want to make sure the crimes are appropriately classified.”

Carroll said the department is continuing to work with the House Oversight Committee, would be demanding a release of documents from the police department’s internal investigation.

2 men, 5-year-old boy shot in Northwest DC /dc/2026/04/2-men-5-year-old-boy-shot-in-northwest-dc/ Wed, 29 Apr 2026 01:14:40 +0000 /?p=29193494 Two men and a child were injured in a shooting in Truxton Circle in D.C. on Tuesday night.

Around 7:10 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to the 400 block of N Street NW for reports of a shooting.

There, police discovered two men suffering from gunshot wounds in the apartment building’s courtyard. They were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

While police were still on the scene, they were informed a child had been shot in the incident and was transported to a hospital by a parent with non-life-threatening injuries. The child — a 5-year-old boy — had been playing in the courtyard when the shooting happened.

Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said at a news conference later Tuesday night that police are searching for two people last seen wearing dark clothing and who had fled the scene on foot. Carroll said the shooting seems to have been random.

Carroll said members of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Crime Suppression Team and task force have increased patrols in the area recently.

“This is completely unacceptable. There’s folks that are just outside in … their neighborhood, here in the courtyard, and again, we see examples of illegal gunfire in the community,” he said. “It’s not acceptable in any manner.”

The move to sanction the sport, announced during an event on the National Mall on Sunday tied to promotion of the 2027 NFL Draft, means teams will operate under the D.C. State Athletic Association and compete for state championship titles, marking a major step in the sport’s rapid growth across the District.

Teams will receive funding, operate under D.C.’s governing athletic body and be able to compete for official championship titles.

The DCSAA said a record number of District high schools are fielding teams, and increased investment from the , which provided uniforms and equipment to all participating teams, is helping fuel the sport’s visibility and infrastructure.

“This is yet another step forward for D.C.’s female student-athletes,” DCSAA Executive Director Kenny Owens said.

Commanders President Mark Clouse said the NFL team is “committed to creating pathways for all athletes.”

Twenty-six D.C. high schools are fielding girls’ flag football teams this spring. The top ones will compete in the third annual DCSAA Flag Football Invitational at Eastern High School in Northeast on May 26.

With the addition of flag football, the will now crown state champions in 26 high school team sports.

Sunday’s announcement follows a similar move by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association to begin in the 2026-27 school year.

Bus fire blankets part of Downtown DC in dark plume of smoke /dc/2026/04/bus-fire-blankets-downtown-dc-in-dark-plume-of-smoke/ Thu, 23 Apr 2026 23:13:52 +0000 /?p=29176230 A Metrobus that caught fire Thursday evening caused a plume of heavy black smoke to cover part of Downtown D.C.

The bus caught fire in the 9th Street Tunnel around 7 p.m. The bus driver was not injured and no one else was riding the bus when the fire started, Metro said.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

At a news conference Thursday night, Metro General Manager and CEO Randy Clarke said because the bus was a hybrid diesel vehicle, out of an abundance of caution, all 32 of the buses in Metro’s fleet are being removed from service and will be inspected.

A spokesperson with D.C. Fire and EMS confirmed with Ƶapp that the tunnel would be closing as personnel worked to put out the fire. The tunnel and 9th Street Expressway between Constitution Avenue NW and Interstate 395 are closed.

“We are working closely with the manufacturer and our bus team is developing plans to mitigate any impacts to bus service as a result of us taking this proactive measure,” WMATA said in a post

Ƶapp Traffic reporter Ian Crawford said firefighters could be seen blocking traffic and entering the tunnel with water hoses.

D.C. Fire Chief John Donnelly said servicing the fire “was a tough operation” because firefighters had to pull about “900 feet of hose and carry it in there.”

“It’s an operation we train for. It’s one we don’t do very often, though,” he said. “It’s a hard tunnel to come into because it’s one way.”

Traffic cameras showed the plume of smoke pouring out of the tunnel and hanging over D.C. for more than an hour before dissipating around 8 p.m.

It is unclear if the tunnel will be open to vehicle traffic on Friday.

Israel Flores Ortiz was found guilty of nine counts of misdemeanor assault and battery in Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on April 10. He was sentenced to 360 days in prison on Tuesday with credit for the time served.

He was initially charged with 13 counts of inappropriately touching girls in crowded hallways. In court last week, surveillance video was played that showed Flores-Ortiz touching the girls.

Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano said at a news conference after the sentencing hearing Tuesday afternoon that what happened in the case was “unacceptable” and his office decided to pursue prosecution because Flores-Ortiz “systematically” and repeatedly attacked those girls.

Flores-Ortiz, a junior at the high school, entered the country illegally from El Salvador in 2024. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said in social media posts that if he’s released, “ICE stands ready to take him into custody and deport” him.

“Critics think that people in prosecutorial offices have unlimited power and that’s not the case. We are bound by evidence. We are bound by the rules of the law. We’re bound by the Constitution. What we do every day is we try to build community safety, but of course, we have to do that within the law and every decision that we make in every case is driven solely by what the law says we’re allowed to do,” Descano said in response to a question about immigration enforcement.

Demetry Pikrallidas, an attorney representing one of the students in the case, said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon, there is “no place for politics” in the case.

“Every case has its own facts, and in this case, it’s somebody who happened to be, as people say, ‘illegal.’ And when that intersects with illegality, there’s a segment of our population that doesn’t like that. We can’t ignore that. … Whether it was George Washington or this individual, I’m going to protect my client,” Pikrallidas said, adding that his only goal was to get justice for his client.
